Hello and Welcome All!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Patricia A Knight author of Hers to Claim.

Patricia A Knight-2Hi Patricia, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

How do you relax?

LOL … not hard to guess. I read. I also like pedicures and manicures, but I can’t always afford those, so I read, read, read.

How did you choose the genre you write in?

Sometimes I think I made it up! [laughter] There didn’t seem to be a plethora of books that incorporated sci-fi/fantasy with hunky heroes and spunky heroines that left the bedroom doors wide open. I could find lots of romance, but it wasn’t sci-fi/fantasy. I could find lots of graphic sex, but it wasn’t romance and it sure wasn’t sci-fi/fantasy. So I combined all the subjects I love to read about and voila!

Where do you get your ideas?

I start off with a well known trope, for example: boys meets girl (no that wasn’t a typo…I love menage), falls in love, live happily ever after. Then I twist it. What is the most unexpected thing that could happen to them … and go from there. Most of the themes in my books are well-loved, everyday plot lines. It’s the unexpected twists that give the characters and events interest.

Who are your favorite authors and what are you reading now?

The author I’m devouring currently is Kit Rocha and her “Beyond” series. (Kit Rocha is a pseudonym for Moira Rogers…who is a pseudonym for two women who collaborate and have written another series that I like bunches…yeah a little confusing!) Any who, she/they writes/write a series of dystopian romances that tickle all my desires: hard driving hero; heroine who has backbone and is an independent woman; a fantasy world of infinite variety and graphic, hard-core sex scenes that flame off the page.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

I don’t think he is famous, but I would have liked to have met my father. He died before I was born. From everything that everyone who knew him says, he was a wonderful man. I would like to have met him.

So, what have you written?

So far the only thing that has been published are the four books in the Verdantian series. Of course I have an intermittent blog, but I can’t really count that. So, just the Verdantian series. It has been well received, so I stay pretty busy with writing the next and the next and the next. [laughter]

What would you say has been the funniest encounter with a fan?

Since I write erotic romance, I try very hard to keep a low profile in public. I do love my fans and have ongoing conversations with them on my blog and on Goodreads. Probably the funniest thing that has happened has been in response to my contest to come up with a new sex toy. For obvious reasons, I can’t repeat exactly what the conversation consisted of, but let’s say I was amazed by my reader’s imagination.

Can you tell us about your upcoming book?

Hers To Claim

Sure! It is a M/M/F menage set on my sci-fi world of Verdantia. The heroes are new to my readers, but the heroine is a character from Book #3, Hers To Cherish.

Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

I have three main characters that are all vastly different. One of my heroes is a serious young man with a very responsible position as captain on a starship. Opposite him is my other hero, the “spare heir” of a noble family, who is also very responsible and capable but he doesn’t know it. He’s never been asked to do anything remotely challenging nor has he been given an opportunity to pursuit his own desires. Set between them is my heroine who is brilliant and empathic with a demanding job as a doctor. How they resolve their conflicts so that they can remain together is the crux of the plot line.

Is anything in you booked based on real life experiences or purely all imagination?

Purely imagination. [smile]

What was your favorite chapter (or part) to write and why?

I loved all of it. I liked introducing the characters. I liked bringing in the sexual tension they felt around each other. I like showing the outside threat and the competency of one of my heroes as he dealt with it. I guess I liked peeling back the layers of each character and revealing them to my readers and to each other. I am thoroughly enjoying writing this book. I wake up each morning enthused about the day’s scene.

Which of your prior characters would you most/least likely invite to dinner and why?

Oooohh! That depends entirely upon what we will be doing AFTER dinner. [grin] If we are simply eating, probably Adonia. She is a very interesting woman. I’d love to pick her brain about the medicinal uses for herbs and such. Now…if the activities were to extend PAST dinner? Well, hmmm, Doral … from Hers To Command. He is so gentle and beautiful and lusty and well-endowed and knowing and, and, and … [sigh]

A prince from the Nyth Uchel mountains … a healer from the Oshtech desert …

Scornfully rejected by her desert lover and uncertain of her place in the world, Adonia traveled a perilous road to the fabled mountain-city of Nyth Uchel. She came to heal the sick and dying, but in the arms of highborn prince, Hel, Adonia found the answer to saving herself.

Descended from nobility, once great kings of Verdantia, Hel willingly bore the burden of his dying city and its people on his shoulders. Watching helplessly as a malingering evil attacked the very soil under his feet, he crushed his pride to summon help. He’d been staggered to discover the answer to saving his city and perhaps all Verdantia might lie behind a heavy fall of chocolate hair and shy brown eyes.

As their entire planet faces an encroaching black death, two seemingly disparate individuals forge a partnership of love and sacrifice that will alter their future forever. All of Verdantia will be tested.

Stand alone. Not a cliff-hanger. HEA 360 pages. M/F, Mild D/s themes, light spanking, and an over-sexed but sensitive prince with a hero complex.

excerpt

A third male crossed his arms over his chest and with a low rumble of laughter, relaxed his stance. “DeHelios. Ha! The last time I saw you, you sprawled unconscious in a shrub leaving a lovely piece of horseflesh in need of an owner.”

Hel studied the speaker. He knew that laconic drawl—but its owner was a criminal with no love for Verdantian nobility. What was this man doing here? “Ramsey DeKieran, you nefarious thief! You owe me the price of that fine horse. You fell on me from a tree, you coward. I never had a chance.”

Ramsey snorted. “Still an egotistical ass. You should be grateful I took only the horse. Your head is still nicely attached.” He caught the eyes of the other two men. “Gentlemen, that tower of smelly fur is ‘Hel’. You may know him by a different name. The Haarb called him bás dtost—the silent death.” Ramsey rolled his eyes.

Hel raised his lip in a snarl at Ramsey’s mockery. “Such illustrious company, DeKieran. Your status in the world seems to have risen—but then it could hardly have fallen lower.”

Ramsey grunted. “Unlikely, eh? You may address me as Lord DeKieran, Fifteenth Earl of House DeKieran, and the striking redhead preparing to unman you from ten feet away is my wife, Lieutenant Colonel Steffania Rickard of the Queen’s Blue Daggers. Be careful with your words, Hel. My vixen is wicked with a throwing knife and takes insults to me personally.”

Hel arched an eyebrow in surprise and nodded at the glorious redhead measuring him with amused golden eyes. “Ma’am, my condolences on your marriage. I assume you had no choice.”

Quotes from the book

“Yes. I know all about soul-wraiths.” Ramsey frowned. “How did you avoid them in the past?”

“Set a perimeter of energized diaman crystal. That will keep them at bay.” Hel smiled without humor. “I have the diaman crystal in my saddle pack. I lack a sexual partner to energize them. I had intended to return with a magistra but a magister will work as well. Care to volunteer?”

“Only if I top,” Ramsey snapped.

“You’d have to kill me first,” returned Hel.

“With pleasure.”

Steffania took a breath. Ram cut her off. “No. I don’t share you, Vixen.”

Fear of the unknown almost froze Adonia’s tongue, but she was the obvious answer. She could do this. The opportunity would never present itself again. “I’ll be your partner.”

He would have seduced her into the erotic world his particular carnality demanded and reveled in the passionate response he knew he could draw from her. She would submit to him gladly. The Goddess had created her for it. The woman gloried in serving.

Sadly, his world was not that world any longer. Brutal practicality stripped his relationships of any niceties and turned sex into another duty performed for those who looked to him for protection.

Steffania shook her head in mock sorrow. “I’ve heard it said people never grow up. They merely learn how to behave in front of others.” She leaned over and whispered loudly, “Ramsey has done neither.”

“It’s a delicious contradiction. He is never more wholly mine than when I am under his total control, in complete service to him.”
