Hello and Welcome All!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Susan Stoker author of Justice for Corrie. Hello Susan, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Lets get started:

What inspired you to write about a blind Heroine?

I read a lot. And I’ve always loved reading books with a Hero or Heroine who has a disability…but one thing I’ve always hated is when at the end of the book, that person is “fixed” and they live happily ever after. Why does the disability have to be “cured” in order for the couple to get their HEA? Why can’t that person be “enough” without having that disability be fixed? So I wanted to write about a woman who has been bind since birth. Has always been blind and will always BE blind. There are no surgeries making her magically “perfect” at the end….BUT…she’s AWESOME even without her sight. Being able to see doesn’t make a person tough, or nice, or creative…it’s who that person is inside.

So I wrote Justice for Corrie to show that just because someone might be blind, or deaf, or mentally handicapped, or be missing an arm or a leg…they are just as able to live a “normal” life as anyone else.

What challenges did you face with writing your heroine?

The main thing, of course, is that I’m not blind. I’ve never been blind, and I don’t really know how it all works. I did a lot of research, but I also reached out to one of my readers who is blind. I sent her an early version of the story and asked her to please read it over and make sure I didn’t mess anything up majorly. She had some great advice for me…like: “You have Corrie carrying her cane around, but she never uses it.” Lol

Another interesting line my editor caught was this one: “And her world went dark.” Well duh, Corrie’s world was already dark. Lol

So it was the little things like that were tough, since I haven’t ever lived as an unsighted person.

Please tell us a little more about the Hero, Officer Quint Axton?

Quint is a guy who is used to taking care of the world. He uses his strength and his strength to protect the citizens in his town. So when his blind girlfriend gets in trouble, he has a really hard time seeing how she will be able to do anything for herself. I think it’s a great moment when he realizes, that just because she can’t see, it doesn’t mean that she isn’t strong.

Did any scene have you crying or laughing while writing it?

It’s tough for me to cry while writing, simply because I’ve got so much going on in my head…where the story is going, oops, I misspelled that word, wait, I’ve used that word too many times, etc etc etc. But when I was writing the scene with Corrie’s best friend’s baby…yeah, that was a bit intense.

If you could have given your characters one piece of advice before the opening pages of the book, what would it be and why?

Don’t underestimate each other.

Thank you Susan for taking time out of your busy schedule to visit with use today and share your latest release Justice for Corrie!

Justice for Corrie

** Justice for Corrie is the 3rd book in the Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Series. Each book is a stand-alone, with no cliffhanger endings. **

Blind since birth, Corrie Madison relies on her other sharpened senses in her job as a chiropractor. Never did she imagine she’d have to depend on them to identify a killer. But when a man enters her practice, murdering everyone in his path, Corrie is the only witness—putting her directly in the killer’s crosshairs.

Officer Quint Axton wasn’t looking for love, or even a relationship, until he meets Corrie. Beautiful and brave, resilient and intelligent, she’s everything Quint wants—if he can keep her alive long enough to explore their mutual attraction. The threats on Corrie’s life are escalating. Surely a blind person is helpless against a ruthless killer?

Hardly. Corrie is about to prove that disabled does not equal defenseless.

    • I’m glad you loved the Interview. I had a great time with Susan and well the blurb and interview made me go out and pick this one up. It just sounds fabulous and I like the idea of a blind heroine. It’s unique and different.

      • I’m adding this to my reading list. Hopefully ONE day I’ll get to it. You should also check out Chance of a Lifetime by Marissa Clarke. It’s an Entangled Lovestruck book and the heroine is also blind. Check out my blog and look up the interview I did with Marissa, to see how she came up with her idea for the book.
