Creating a World
One thing about writing paranormal romance is that I can have fun with the world building. When I created the Dante’s Circle series, I wanted to write about every paranormal creature I could think of and put them in one world.
Oh boy was that harder than I thought it would be!
Each book started a new set of research as well new worlds to build within the constructs of the main world…and you know…the romance!
In this series, I had the privilege of writing lions, dragons, sirens, mermen, bears, wolves, fae, pixies, and more. When I went about creating the rules for each world, I knew that some things needed to be fixed so it made sense within the main world. As in how they can travel from one realm to another, how long they live, or how powerful they are compared to others.
But some things could be unique to my worlds. I got to decide how they shifted, if they shifted, what special aspects changed their physical form when they were in their paranormal half if they didn’t shift into an animal…
And the list goes on and on.
I researched a few pieces of lore for each type of paranormal and blended some of it for my worlds, but in reality, I did what made sense for my characters. So a pixie might have wings that change color when she gets emotional because the character is a bit hot headed…or a succubus might need to have two mates so she can survive the long winter’s night.
I loved creating these worlds and in Prowled Darkness, I got to create the final realms. Malik is a lion shifter, the prince of his realm and holds the responsibility of so many others on his shoulders. As for Eliana’s realm…well you’re going to have to read to find out!
I loved writing Prowled Darkness and I hope you love reading it!
Do you have a favorite paranormal creature? What is it and why is it your favorite?
Humans aren’t as alone as they choose to believe. Every human possesses a trait of supernatural that lays dormant within their genetic make-up. Centuries of diluting and breeding have allowed humans to think they are alone and untouched by magic. But what happens when something changes?
Eliana Sawyer’s life was rocked from its foundation twice in as many years. She risked her heart and had it shattered into a thousand pieces when Malik left her with no warning. While she’d normally raise her chin and ignore the pain, she can’t forget what he gave her before he disappeared from her life.
Malik Ward is a prince amongst the lion shifters and knows that one day he will have to take a mate. Only, his people can never mate with humans. Under the mistaken impression that Eliana was only human, he forced himself to leave before they’d crossed a line and he broke his vow to his people. Now that he knows the truth about Eliana, however, it will take more than groveling to win back the one woman fated to be his.
While Eliana and Malik embark on a new sensuous path that might lead to disaster, the realms aren’t ready to allow the final lightning-struck human to be enveloped into their fold. The couple will have to combat those plotting against them, as well as the broken promises and heated emotions they share.
Warning: Contains a Leo with a bite that’s worse than his roar, a woman with one last chance at the life she’s always dreamt of, a flame that could extinguish with the wrong sacrifice, and the final journey in the bestselling Dante’s Circle series.

“Dude. I’m going to have a baby. A baby cub. What the hell am I going to do?”
Amara hugged her close and kissed her temple. Her friend warmed her when Eliana hadn’t been sure she could ever feel any form of warmth again. “You’re going to be a kickass mom. You and Malik are going to talk and figure out a plan. Whether you are together or apart, you’ll be there for this baby. We all will. I know fate just threw you a curveball of epic proportions, but you can handle it. You’re stronger than you think you are.”
Eliana hoped her friend was right. Because everything had changed once again and now she had to be the rock for not only herself but her baby, as well. Only she was tired of being the rock. She wanted to lean against someone. She wanted a partner.
She just didn‘t think Malik knew what it meant to be a partner. Because she sure as hell didn’t.
New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Ann Ryan never thought she’d be a writer. Not really. No, she loved math and science and even went on to graduate school in chemistry. Yes, she read as a kid and devoured teen fiction and Harry Potter, but it wasn’t until someone handed her a romance book in her late teens that she realized that there was something out there just for her. When another author suggested she use the voices in her head for good and not evil, The Redwood Pack and all her other stories were born.
Carrie Ann is a bestselling author of over twenty novels and novellas and has so much more on her mind (and on her spreadsheets *grins*) that she isn’t planning on giving up her dream anytime soon.
