A Day in the Life of Kerry Adrienne…

…starts around ten or eleven. I’m a night owl and if I’m lucky, I sleep late. I get up and feed the pets—we have two Bengals and they don’t like their food dishes to be empty. In fact, they usually sleep across my feet so they will know if I am trying to sneak out of bed without feeding them. Our rescue cats tend to hang back and let the alpha cats gorge.

I check messages and scan email on my phone to see if anything needs immediate attention.

I get dressed for the day—my normal writing attire is a T-shirt and capris, hair up in a clip. Then, I go downstairs and feed our Panther Chameleon, Anakin. I check his mister to make sure he has water in the pump and if it’s a warm day, I’ll take him outside in the sunshine to bask. He’s super cute—and terrified of airplanes. I think he thinks they are predators.

If my 9yo, Andi, is up, I fix her breakfast and I usually have a glass of milk. I don’t drink much coffee. After “breakfast” (truly, it’s lunch), Andi and I go over her homeschool assignments for the day. That may include her bartering to not do a certain subject, or asking if she can have a pajama day or make a movie or write. I usually do go with the flow of what she wants because I know she will truly learn what she loves. She has piano and Odyssey of the Mind, so those days are a little different. Some days, she sleeps late and does homeschool at night. I love the relaxed pace of her education. We don’t do grades—we just go over anything she misses on her work. I try to make sure she gets as many creative opportunities as possible.

Once she is settled in to work, I come to my office and get my computer up and running, music on. I usually spend the first hour catching up on tasks and social media stuff. Sometimes, it takes longer. I love chatting with my friends and we discuss everything plus some.

At this point, I’m usually hungry and go make a sandwich or get a bowl of soup. I check in on Andi and help her if needed. As soon as she finishes her work, she plays (usually MineCraft or Terraria). I open my current work in progress and stare at it while I eat. I usually think everything I have written is horrible and I have to push through to get started. Once I do get going, I fall into the story and work until around four or five. By this time, my brain is tired and I take an hour nap, after texting my husband and deciding on a dinner plan (I fix it, or he fixes it, or he picks something up on the way home from work).

He’s usually home by the time I wake up. We eat and chat about the day. Sometimes he will play video games with Andi while I write more and sometimes we just call it a day and I move to my mobile office to work (the bedroom). We watch shows we’ve recorded on TiVo or old movies. Last year, we re-watched every single episode of Star Trek. The original series, the Next Generation, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. Plus the movies. That’s a lot of episodes! We finished in December. Right now, we have just finished re-watching all the Twilight Zones and are now watching Alfred Hitchcock (the TV show and movies). We love The Walking Dead, too. Though my husband watches and decompresses, I continue to work on my laptop.

I usually text or chat with my two daughters in college. One is working on her teaching certification and BA for Elementary Education, and the other is a PhD student in Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon.

I may be scheduling posts, doing more social media, working on my web site, or writing. Once he turns out the light around one or two am, then I write until I am too sleepy to continue. Ask my editor—she’s seen plenty of sleep writing! Many, many nights I am awake until the birds start their morning singing.

Add to every single one of those activities, the Bengals. Tigger and Roo follow me everywhere and get into everything. I mean EVERYTHING. If you ever consider getting a Bengal, message me. You need to know what you are getting into! But I love the boys so much and can’t imagine being without them.

When I finally shut the lights off, invariably hubby’s alarm goes off and he gets up to go to work. If he’s caught me staying up all night, he’ll grumble (I have chronic migraines and lack of sleep is a definite trigger). Usually. I barely get the light out before he wakes up.

That’s my very normal and boring day! I work seven days a week and have trouble not writing every day. I occasionally teach a college writing class, but otherwise, I’m at home a lot. Which is fine by me.

Thanks for having me!

Kerry Adrienne

“What an ursus…umm…whatever you said? I’ve always worked with my hands—I never was a college guy. Didn’t have the patience to sit still in the classroom.” Derek kicked at the ground then looked up.

“No worries.” She snapped her attention back to what he was saying. “Most people don’t know what an ursinologist is—it’s someone who studies bears.”

“Bears, huh?” He shook his head and laughed. “You study bears?”

“What’s so funny?” She crossed her arms. “It’s a valid profession. And I’m doing what I love.”

“Nothing wrong with it, Bria.” He stepped so close to her she had to look up to meet his gaze, and held his hands up in mock surrender. “I think it’s a fine profession, I’ve just never heard of it. It’s a totally new job that I’ve never heard of. Yet here you are in the woods with me, so I guess we aren’t that far apart, career-wise.”

Derek was in her space and even though they weren’t touching, she felt his presence touching hers, like a low-level energy buzzing in the evening air, crackling when hers met his. One step closer and she could pull that hair band out and hop into his arms, straddling him as she kissed him. She shook her head to clear her naughty thoughts. Ugh. Stop. The thoughts about what she’d like to do to the hot park ranger needed to stop. Maybe she’d been out in the sun too long. Normally she didn’t ogle guys. In fact, she couldn’t remember the last time she had. She cleared her throat and took a step back. “I thought you were laughing at me.”

“No. I didn’t know there was a name for someone who studies bears. Plus, the word sounds kinda funny.” He scanned the forest, thumbs in his belt loops. “I guess you’re in the right place to look for bears, though. Especially this deep in the forest. Lots of them live in Deep Creek. They’re everywhere. Probably closer than you think.”

“I hope so.” Her shoulders lowered and she blew out a breath. “Have you seen any this season? I know they are more active in summer. After they’ve woken from hibernation.”

“I see them every day. I’m out in the woods a lot.” He chewed his lip. “They really only partially hibernate, though. But yeah, I guess you could say I’ve seen a lot of bears here in Deep Creek.”

He’d seen bears. Recently. Her pulse thumped in her neck and she leaned forward, as if being near him would make the bears closer. Excitement rang in her ears. “Where? Can you show me, or at least give me some pointers where to look? I can’t wait to see them.”

“My best advice is to keep your eyes open. You never know when a bear will appear right in front of you.”

Kerry loves history and spends large amounts of time wondering about people who lived and walked on Earth in the past. She’s a mom to three daughters, six cats, and various small animals. Her husband says she’s a marketer’s dream, as she often believes everything she hears—at least initially. Her shoe horde will attest to her fine shopping skills.

In addition to writing, Kerry loves to sew (costumes and cosplay, especially), draw, paint, make chainmail, and play guitar.

Her new love is her Mini Cooper Convertible, Sheldon, and they have already gone on many adventures. They travel to as many concerts as they can–especially Green Day and Marilyn Manson.

  1. Loved the guest post. I don’t have a Bengal cat, but seriously my normal tabbies are just as naughty. 🙂 Also, love Star Trek TNG, my husband and I are also re-watching that series; it’s my favorite one. Thanks for the giveaway. ~Aleen
