Interview: Deborah Wilde (The Unlikeable Demon Hunter) ~ Excerpt

Posted on by

Hello & Welcome!

Today I’m happy to introduce Deborah Wilde author of The Unlikeable Demon Hunter. Deborah, Thank you for visiting Angel’s Guilty Pleasures and speaking with me today.

What do you do when you are not writing?

I teach screenwriting, read a ton, and make sure to fit my family and friends in there somewhere. 🙂

How much research do you do?

A lot. I research everything from Jungian psychology to demon mythology to restaurants in a specific city. Whether theme-based, plot-based, or detail- specific, I’m constantly researching.

Do you work with an outline, or just write?

I always have an outline. That said, the level of detail varies from book to book. I often end up re-outlining when I’m halfway through.

If you could swap lives with the heroine of any romance book, which book would you choose and why?

Lady Calpurnia Hartwell from Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake. I love how she unabashedly decides she’s going to reclaim her life through this list. Plus, Gabriel is one of the sexiest fictional characters ever.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

Dorothy Parker because of her incredible wit and talent.

The Unlikable Demon Hunter

Would you tell us a little about your book?

It’s the age-old story of what happens when a foul-mouthed, romance impaired heroine with no edit button and a predilection for hot sex is faced with her worst nightmare–a purpose. It describe it as Bridesmaids meets Buffy with a dash of the seven deadly sins.

Give us some insight into your main character. What does he or she do that is so special?

Well, my starting point with Nava was thinking about what makes female characters “likeable” and the double standards that even fictional women are held to. I think what makes her special is that despite some serious emotional baggage and deep flaws, she has a strong moral compass and sense of loyalty, and she’s truly unapologetic about her life and her choices. That said, while there’s a lot of growth for her to undertake, I think these qualities make for a compelling foundation.

What was the hardest thing about writing The Unlikable Demon Hunter?

It’s the same thing with all characters I write – digging deep into their emotional truths, because on some level, that means digging deep into mine.

What is your favorite scene from the book?

I can’t say that I have just one. I do really love the entire opening sequence and how it blows this idea of “chosen one” open.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters in The Unlikeable Demon Hunter, who would it be and what would you guys do?

I should say I’d hang out with Nava, but (sheepish grin) I have a real crush on Rohan so, you know, “hang out” with him?

Deborah, it was a pleasure having you visit. Thank you for taking the time to chat with me today!

Thank you so much for having me!

Book Description:

Bridesmaids meets Buffy with a dash of the seven deadly sins.

The age-old story of what happens when a foul-mouthed, romance impaired heroine with no edit button and a predilection for hot sex is faced with her worst nightmare–a purpose

Ari Katz is intelligent, driven, and will make an excellent demon hunter once initiated into the Brotherhood of David. However, this book is about his twin Nava: a smart-ass, self-cultivated hot mess, who is thrilled her brother is stuck with all the chosen one crap.

When Nava half-drunkenly interrupts Ari’s induction ceremony, she expects to be chastised. What she doesn’t expect is to take her brother’s place among the–until now–all-male demon hunters. Even worse? Her infuriating leader is former rock star Rohan Mitra.

Too bad Rohan’s exactly what Nava’s always wanted: the perfect bad boy fling with no strings attached, because he may also be the one to bring down her carefully erected emotional shields. That’s as dangerous as all the evil fiends vying for the bragging rights of killing the only female ever chosen for Demon Club.

Odds of survival: eh.

Odds of having a very good time with Rohan before she bites it: much better.

The Unlikeable Demon Hunter

Shivering as much from cold as disappointment, I hooked my chin into the neck of the hoodie, folding the cuffs over my hands.

“You barely have anything on under there.” Despite Rohan’s contemptuous tone, when he poked at my sleeve, his hands lingered a second too long.

“Maybe the demons aren’t the only ones who want bragging rights of bagging the first non-dick-swinging Rasha.” I tugged away, irritated.

Rohan’s nostrils flared. “Fuck you the first for thinking I kiss and tell,” he said. “And fuck you the second if you think I need bragging rights when it comes to sex. You’re not that much of a novelty.” The angry growl in his voice convinced me that his motives were the normal “have sex because sex with an attractive girl would be great” variety and not anything involving notches on belts.

This game I could play.

I placed my hand on my hoodie’s zipper. “You want me to flash you?” My half-smile was accompanied by my best “sideways eye slide looking up through half-open lashes” maneuver.

A car’s headlights swept over us.

Rohan pushed me deeper into the shadows. “Don’t do me any favors.”

I slid the hoodie zipper down, waiting to see if he’d stop me.

He didn’t. Instead, he frowned as he inspected tonight’s cotton sleepwear offering. “Yesterday’s was cuter.” He motioned around my cleavage. “It had that purple lace.”

I glanced up at my window, realizing how far into the room I could see from here. “You perved on me last night? Some guard you are.”

He didn’t even have the good grace to look ashamed. “Bring more of those when you move.”

“Because this is all about you.”

Rohan bopped the end of my nose with his index finger. “See? Was that so hard to admit?”

Grumbling, secretly pleased, definitely annoyed with myself for figuring out how many cute, electricity-proof outfits I owned, I zipped up my sweater and headed inside.
