Interview: Sarita Leone (Regenerate) ~ Excerpt

Posted on by

Hello & Welcome!

Today I’m happy to introduce Sarita Leone author of Regenerate. Sarita, Thank you for visiting Angel’s Guilty Pleasures and speaking with me today.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to chat with you!

Was there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

I remember being influenced at a really young age by the book HARRIET THE SPY. Harriet was so cool; she carried a journal, figured things out, and was a spy. How great is that?

In college, I read all I could of Hemingway and Faulkner. Their writing styles and word use to show action and emotion had an impact on me. They are still on my bookshelves—along with Harriet!

What genre(s) do you write in and how did you choose to write in them?

Currently I’m writing paranormal romantic thrillers but I’ve also written Regency and contemporary romances. It’s a big leap from Regency to paranormal but it feels like a good fit and I’m enjoying it.

Writing historical romance springs from an interest in history. I love learning about days gone by. The way people lived, laughed, loved—it’s just an interest so writing those stories was a learning experience.

What are some books you have enjoyed recently?

I’ve begun reading a series of mysteries set in Reykjavik, written by Icelandic author Arnaldur Indridason. The first one is called JAR CITY and I’m loving it, mostly because the writing is solid and I’ve yet to figure out the crime!

I’m also reading FACE THE FIRE by Nora Roberts. She never disappoints and I’ve really enjoyed this trilogy.

What do you do when you are not writing?

When I’m not writing I really like to get outdoors. I hike, kayak, snowshoe, and garden. I also enjoy traveling, and can pack a suitcase, grab my passport, and head to the airport faster than most people can peel an apple.

What type of scenes are your most favorite to write?

I like to write scenes where a character realizes something about his or her journey. I like those “aha” moments that show growth. That being said, I also get a charge out of writing the gritty, edgy scenes where it’s a life-or-death situation and no one—even me!—knows just who’ll be left standing at the end of a chapter.

Which of your characters are you most similar to and why?

I think there’s a bit of me in a number of my characters. Since I’m so closely working with Nicole Anima right now, I see so much of me in her. She’s not afraid to step outside the lines, or afraid of much of anything, and that’s one of my character traits. I’m not sure if it’s a good one or not, but I seriously can’t deny I’m that way.

Would you tell us a little about your book, Regenerate?

REGENERATE is an action-packed paranormal romantic thriller. Nicole Anima and Benjamin Sinclair are agents for a covert government intelligence agency called The Octopus. When global economies begin to topple, they’re called in to eliminate the threat and restore world order. Throw in a zombie army, prickly past relationship issues between these agents, and an assassination plot that could wipe out a few world leaders, and you’ve got a real mess on your hands. Oh—and Anima is a psychic who struggles with not losing the brilliant mind that’s constantly invaded by the world’s thoughts and Sinclair…well, he’s technically a dead man walking. That’s right, he’s been regenerated using the best science has to offer and is now immortal.

How did you come up with the concept and the characters for Regenerate?

I’ve been personally affected by stem cell research, technology, and medical application. Stem cells save lives but unfortunately not everyone is spared. So I regenerated Superagent Ben Sinclair. I brought a hero back from death, made him invincible, and now he saves the whole world.

What did you enjoy most about writing Regenerate?

I loved writing this book. It’s truly the book straight from my heart, so every aspect of writing this brought joy. I think the relationship between Anima and Sinclair is a high point for me; at the opening she hates him—or believes she does because her heart is so broken by his truth. I watched her soften, then accept, him—at the same time, he knows he’s wronged her but since turning back time isn’t an option he simply waits her out and does the best he can to show who he really is. So the relationship is the part I enjoyed the most.

If you could spend the day with one of the characters in Regenerate, who would it be and what would you guys do?

I would love to spend a day with Ben Sinclair. Honestly, I’d do whatever he wanted—chase assassins, slay zombies, make love in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower…it all sounds good to me!

Sarita, it was a pleasure having you visit. Thank you for taking the time to chat with me today!

Thank you for allowing me to visit. This has been so much fun!

GENRE: Paranormal Romantic Suspense

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Octopus isn’t an urban myth—and its agents are anything but ordinary. The intelligence bureau is so well-hidden most doubt its existence. A handful know its location. And fewer walk the halls in the subterranean compound.
Benjamin Sinclair didn’t ask to be a scientific miracle but every mission has its risks and one perfectly-placed bullet ended his life—for a brief moment in time.
Nicole Anima battles demons every day. Life as a paranormal resources operative gives her tortured mind a rest—and keeps her from contemplating her own death.
When Anima and Sinclair partner on a globe-trotting race to eliminate the threat about to cripple humanity, all hell breaks loose. Leaping from planes, crashing into continents, dealing with voodoo priestesses, and running through jungles with zombies hot on their trail doesn’t leave much time for romance, but this duo somehow manages to sizzle.
Two agents. Telepathic mind paired with regenerated commando. One world—and a mission to save it.
Rating high on the awkward factor—facing someone you’ve just had earth-shaking, huge-tidal-wave-climax sex with and feeling as if it may have been the best—and worst—choice of your life.
Nicole could have hit herself in the head, payback for her brain not doing its job when she needed it most. She’d thought with her heart, not her wits and now she was going to have to deal with that.
Who was she trying to fool? Her heart had nothing to do with it.
No, that wasn’t true, either. She’d kicked common sense to the curb and let her heart rule. Now she felt a victim of an emotional ping pong match.
Heart? Mind? Did it matter?
They had rekindled something that never should have happened in the first place.
Only now, she wasn’t sure about that, either. Hard to shake off the feelings she had for him. Her emotions didn’t care what he was—but her mind? A different story. Now, both heart and mind were more tangled than ever.
Crashing onto South America after nearly being eaten by a zombie in a cemetery had left her psychologically vulnerable. Grabbing Sinclair—and his to-die-for body and better-than-any-fantasy penis—had been marvelous but the truth was, she had never been this confused in her life. About anything.
Damn it, but she was screwed.
In more ways than one.
If only…
Crap.
If only she hadn’t enjoyed it so much.
Staring at herself in the miniscule bathroom mirror wasn’t helping. Her skin glowed, the result of a mind-shattering orgasm. She had a flush that seemed so tell-tale she was embarrassed to have anyone see her. And her eyes, they were the worst. The glimmer in a satiated woman’s eyes was unmistakable.
