Interview: Katherine Garbera (Dance with the Devil)

Posted on by

Hello and Welcome All!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Katherine Garbera, Author of Dance with the Devil.

How did you come up with the idea for this story?

The idea for the story came from watching season 2 of Daredevil on Netflix.  There is this character…the Punisher who has lost everything and he was so raw and angsty, I thought I’d like to write a character like that.  Which kind of got me thinking about violence and how my hero would be born and raised in violence.  Like violence soothes him, it’s what he’s good at it, it’s what he expects life to dish out to him and so when he falls in love with the heroine he can’t believe it.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

I love writing.  The biggest challenge for me is finding time to write all the ideas that I have.  I try to write everyday (well Monday-Friday) and when I can’t I’m cranky and not good company.  So I sit down and open up Word and just write and that usually puts me in a better mood.

What are your current projects?

Currently I’m working on book three in the Gods of War series. I also have book three in my Candied Apple Café series out in November. And I’m continuing my Wild Caruthers series for Harlequin Desire.

Does music play any type of role in your writing?

I started writing when I was a receptionist and so wrote bits of my novel while answering the phone.  So music is always a huge part of my writing. I can’t write if the house is too quiet.  I do find that I can’t listen to new music while I’m trying to get new pages down. Sometimes if the music or lyrics are too catchy I stop writing to listen to it.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?

I’m working on a book right now called Once Upon A Texas Christmas.  It’s set in  the fictional town of Whiskey River, Texas and has a matchmaking ghost.  The thing I love most about this series is I’m collaborating with three of my good friends on it.

Do you have a special time to write? How is your day structured writing-wise?

I have always had to make money from writing since I was working before I got published and so I treated writing like a job—the most awesome job in the world! So I work every Monday – Friday.  When my kids were little I wrote after I took them to school and when they were infants after I put them to bed (I had a strict 7pm bedtime for them).  But now that they are grown I usually start writing at 8 a.m.  I write in sprints of 10-15 minutes where I try to get 500 words down on the page.  And then I take a 10-15 minute break where I either get up and walk around, dance to songs from Time To Dance playlist or play a computer game usually backgammon against the computer. Then I repeat this pattern until I’ve finished a chapter usually around 3000 words. I tend to finish up around 1.  And then I take the rest of the day for social media or shopping or crafts (I love making cards and art journaling) or playing with my dog!

When and why did you begin writing?

I started writing in 1992 when my daughter was six months old.  At the time her father had a job he loved and I had a job that I really didn’t like and when I looked at my baby I thought I don’t want her growing up in a house where men get to do something they love and women have to just do whatever brings home the bacon.  So I asked myself what I loved and there were two things being a mom and reading.  And I had been starting and not finishing writing projects for several years (since I was 21, I was 23 at the time) and I decided that I would finish everything I started since I always didn’t want my daughter to be a quitter and that I would try writing.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

When my first book was published.

Tell us something that people would be surprised you know how to do?

I am a third degree red belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Will you write more about these characters?

Yes! Books two and three are coming soon.

Thank you Katherine for taking a moment to speak with us today!
