Midnight Marked is book twelve in the Chicagoland Vampires series by Chloe Neill. It’s full of action, adventure, and mystery.

I’ve had my highs and lows with this series and I think I’m ready for it to end.

In the past year Merit has gone from a reluctant vampire to doing whatever it takes to keep her vampire family safe. She’s now celebrating her one-year vampire anniversary and her relationship with Ethan is strong. It’s been one interesting journey to this point.

A lot of questions that I thought would remain mysteries where answered. We also see the House call in Paige for help with this particular mystery. And, when I thought we wouldn’t be getting any new supernaturals in the mix, Neill brings in a necromancer. I enjoyed Annabelle an added secondary character to the world and story. She was quite interesting and useful. Their is also no shortage of humor added into the mix while these characters try to figure out who or what is causing problems in good old Chicago.

My only issue and this issue has run throughout the series is that I never feel that Ethan and Merit are equals. He calls her Sentinel and she calls him Master. With a group, that seams ok, but when they are together it just feels wrong, not right. Their relationship and how it’s portrayed is the one thing I’ve had trouble with throughout the series.

Audio Note: I did try the audiobook first, but I stopped it after 2-5 min in. I hated the male voices for Ethan and Catcher. They sounded so wrong. I couldn’t do the book in audio, so I read it like all the previous editions. (Narrator: Sophie Eastlake)

  1. OK I agree that the Master and Sentinel doesn’t bother me as it is pet names. I always think Merit is treated as an equal and had too many skills too quick. Personally, I’m for the equality in the relationship but not in the House. I really enjoyed the book. Anne

    • Intersting. Thank’s for sharing your views. I never got that Master and Sentinel were pet names, but I can see it being that way. I can agree with you on, Merit getting too many skills too quickly. I have wavered throughout the series on their relationship being equal and not. Maybe it’s the whole name thing that makes me waver on it. Who knows!! Still a fun and enjoyable series to read.

  2. To me, calling each other Master and Sentinel makes me think they are calling each other endearments. I think that is why it hasn’t really bothered me. I’m so sad to hear the audio is not that great. I read all of them, so haven’t attempted the audio at all. I don’t think I could after reading them all. I sort of have my own voices for the characters in my head.

    • I’ve been on an audio kick, so I wanted to listen, but the male voices did not work and I had to read the book like all the previous editions. I won’t be trying this series in audio at all. Reading it, yep. Audio, nope.

      I never felt that Master and Sentinel where endearments. It didn’t come across like that too me, but that’s nice you see it that way. Maybe if I had thought of it like that; before I got this far, it might not have bothered me, but it probably still would have.

    • It’s a fun series. Took me a while to get into. I had issues with the first few books, but then I got into the plot and enjoyed. Thank’s for visiting and sharing.

  4. sorry it didn’t hit the home run Angela but it sounds like you still liked it. 3.5 is not a bad rating at all and I know other people start feeling this way about long running series.

    • 3 stars or 3.5 stars are not bad. I still read books that get those ratings from bloggers I follow. Not every book in a series will be a hit, but it’s following along with the characters and seeing what happens next that keeps me coming back. I had trouble with this series at the start, but ended up sticking with it and have enjoyed the ride. Looking forward to the finale book in this series Book #13.

  6. I’m glad to read that I’m not the only one that did not that that wording between them. I really do enjoy the series and look forward to reading about their daughter and the wolves son.

    • Ya, I’ve always had an issue with the wording between these two. It just never fully felt right. Glad I’m not the only one who noticed. I’m looking forward to the final installment and the spin-off with the wolves and their daughter. ^_^
