Evolution is the Game, Witches are the Glitch

After a decade long war, witches have been obliterated, or so the world thinks. A precarious peace settles and, for the small town of Margaret River, life returns to normal, but for Roo, the hard work is just beginning.

Roo works at the local bar, is a little facetious and can’t wait to high-tail it out of there to keep her powers secret. She’s not certain where they came from but the last thing she wants is to be burned at the stake. Hiding in plain sight seems to work until Cash, a darkly handsome hunter, arrives with disaster in his wake. Witches aren’t defeated, only hidden, and there’s one gunning for Roo and her family. The recent war only touched the surface of the preternatural world and with Cash’s help, Roo learns there are worse things that go bump in the night... and she might be one of them.

Soon she must make a choice—risk exposure to save her loved ones, or remain hidden and safe. But sometimes safe isn’t an option. Sometimes safe is a never-ending game.

Soul Thing is book one in The Game of Gods series by Lana Pechercyzk. Everything that happens in this story is based around witches, gods, and a game they are playing.

Soul Thing had some things I like and some things not so much. It was interesting, a bit confusing, and I’m a bit conflicted on how I feel about Soul Thing.

The story starts off a little slow, but then it picks up. The action is quick and we learning a lot about Roo and this world that has opened up to her. We get a lot of information thrown at us and it became a bit overwhelming to me.

From what I understand the humans where fighting a war with witches. They did a purge, which is burning witches at the stake, and so they thought the witches where gone for good. But after a few years we learn it didn’t work and now the governments of the world have signed a peace treaty with witches. Bedsides the witches their is a deeper plot/game happening.

Unfortunately for the female population the world has gone back into the dark ages where women no longer have rights and the men in their life controls everything. Who they marry, where they work, etc.. Besides all that the women are collared in a way, which makes me think of slavery. No rights for women. I’m a little upset with this plot direction in the story. These new laws aren’t going to stop the bad witches from taking over a human body and kicking out the soul. The witches can do magic and so I don’t understand why the government has gone back to the dark ages with women.

Roo is an interesting character. I liked her. Her life gets turned upside down, but she doesn’t wallow in self pity. She tries to find answers as to what she is, what she can do, and what her part in this game might be. Their is also a possible lover interest in Cash, but for now that is on the sidelines until we learning more. Theirs a lot of mystery surrounding these characters that needs to be sorted out.

As the story goes we learn that their is a deeper game happening that most humans don’t know about. The gods and their people are playing this game. I’m not sure really what they’re playing for. The game concept is wired and bit confusing.

The author did a nice job, but I feel like she may have over thunk things. I’m bit confused with a lot of the things introduced to us. As for Soul Thing it was an all right read, but it didn’t leave me with the feeling of wanting to continue on.

  1. This sounds interesting. First books are so hard. I mean I was not impressed with book one in the Kate Daniels series it was just ok…but now holy heck I am addicted.

    • I’m not going to be continuing the series. I didn’t hit it off with this even though I devoured the book, I was a little overwhelmed and confused. Not really how I want to feel after reading a book. Thank’s Melliane for visiting.

  4. unlike regular series/trilogies the debut in a fantasy, UF or PR can be a crap shoot, There’s usually world building which can get overwhelming when the building blocks become too uneven and sometimes too much to put your mind around. But this does look interesting I don’t like women going back to the dark ages so I hope the star will be pulling it out.

    • I agree with you on the fantasy and UF being a crap shoot on the first book. Some authors can pull it off and others it’s just to much information to process in one book. I have to say the do love the cover and that’s what pulled me in. It’s so vibrant with all it’s colors and it does portray our lead heroine perfectly. As for the series, I’m not going to be going on with this one. I just felt to off at the end on it and the feeling I had is something I don’t want after reading a book. Thank’s Debbie for visiting and sharing your thoughts.
