Interview with Author Juliette Cross

Hello and Welcome All!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Author Juliette Cross.

Hi Juliette, thank you for taking the time to visit Angel’s Guilty Pleasures today.

For those readers not familiar with you, would you please tell us a bit about yourself?

Hi, Angel. Thank you for having me! I am a native of Louisiana. I live there with my husband and four children (actually, three now since my eldest is in the Navy and recently shipped overseas). I write paranormal and fantasy romance. I have series in three different worlds at the moment—a historical vampire world, a contemporary modern world of angels and demons, and a fantasy world where humans live alongside dragon hybrids.

Tell us about your favorite writing environment. Indoors, outdoors, a special room, etc.?

I have a comfy chair in the den where I do most of my writing. But because I’ve got four kids, I tend to write with my headphones on and my Pandora playlist on so I can lose myself in the story. One of these days, I’ll transform a bedroom into my own office!

How did you choose the genre you write in?

I’ve always been fascinated with dark fantasy and sexy paranormal. My favorite book at 16 was Jane Eyre. I loved the mystery, the Gothic setting, and the dark romance. I was also a huge fan of Anne Rice as a young reader. But it was when I started reading Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changeling series that I knew this was the genre I wanted to immerse myself in as a writer.

Where do you get your ideas?

Good question. I’m not completely sure. I can tell you that I’m often inspired by art and classic literature. And music. It was a painting I saw on Deviant Art of a winged warrior woman and a dragon that spawned the entire idea for my Morgon world (the Nightwing and Vale of Stars series). The painting “Le Jeune Martyre” which I first saw in the Louvre, inspired much of the hero’s backstory in The Vessel Trilogy. I use Pinterest boards, too, to inspire characters and plots. I’m pretty much inspired by all other forms of art.

What types of scenes are your most favorite to write and why?

The deeply emotional ones, whether it’s an intimate scene with the hero/heroine or just a bonding scene between them through deeply personal conversation. These scenes are intense, and I find them cathartic. Emotionally satisfying when I’m finished writing.

Which character in what book are you most similar to and why?

Ella from NIGHTBLOOM reminds me of who I was as a young woman. Unsure of herself and though she is smart with a mind of her own, she is often too afraid to voice it. I’ll be honest and say that’s how I was when I was much younger. Now, I’d probably say I’m more like Moira from WAKING THE DRAGON. She’s curious, independent, and strong-willed. And opinionated. That’s definitely me now. Lol.

Can you tell us about your challenges in getting your first book published?

Wow. So this is a long story, but let me sum it up if I can. I wrote two books (one historical romance and the second historical paranormal), queried agents, and was rejected countless times before I then wrote FORGED IN FIRE and found my first agent. While we pitched FiF, I wrote the Nightwing series, so we started pitching that as well. I was offered two book deals with Lyrical/Kensington Publishing for Nightwing and Samhain Publishing for The Vessel Trilogy within a month of each other. But it was literally years before I reached that first book deal. It takes a lot of perseverance.

Are there certain characters you would like to go back to, or is there a theme or idea you’d love to work with?

I feel like I never want to leave my worlds completely. Once created, I just always want to go back. I do have three other series ideas, one of which is straight contemporary, that I’d like to write. But the foremost series is another contemporary paranormal series set in New Orleans I’m not sharing much about just yet. This series will have book 1 released in 2019. It will be more romcom paranormal, much more humorous and quirky than my other books. I can’t wait to start writing!

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way whether growing up or as an adult?

Definitely Charlotte Bronte when I was a young adult. Her Gothic settings and sense of emotionally intense writing still influences me. Also, Nalini Singh and Juliet Marillier have been idols for me as an adult writer. I continue to admire their works and writing.
