Interview: Christina Bauer (Shifters and Glyphs)

Hello and Welcome All!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Christina Bauer author of Shifters and Glyphs.

Hi Christina, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Thanks for having me here!

Tell us a bit about yourself?

I live outside Boston, MA with my husband, son, and crazy golden retriever Ruby. Sass and sarcasm are my default way of communicating with the world.

Where do you get your ideas?

I get a lot of ideas from my Pinterest page. I keep tons of images in a hidden board called ‘needs a home.’ Every so often, one picture will stick in my head and from there, a story begins.

What are some books you have enjoyed recently?

These days, I’ve been reading alien-slash-shifter romances by Amanda Milo. She creates shifters that are unique and super intricate, kick-ass worlds. Highly recommend.

Is there any particular author or book that influenced you in any way either growing up or as an adult?

When I was teenager, I first read The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien. There weren’t a lot of fantasy books yet available, and that series became a total game changer for me.

If you could swap lives with the heroine of any book, which book would you choose and why?

If that’s the scenario, then I’d write a book about someone who wins twenty billion dollars and then spends it making the world a better place. Sign me up for that life!

Please summarize the Shifters and Glyphs a la Twitter style for the readers here:

Bryar Rose is a modern New Yorker cursed to live out a Sleeping Beauty life template. She breaks out of that mold only to discover that an even bigger, badder life story awaits in ancient Egypt … and it could cost the lives of everyone she loves.

Please share the opening lines of this book:

I’m a teenager who can wield magic, so you might think my ultimate in fun would be casting a spell.

Not really.

Plus, I live in Manhattan and—since my aunties no longer have me locked me up in a penthouse—you’d imagine that I love roaming the city.

Nope.

I’m also a werewolf, so racing under the moon could be my fav for fun.

It’s not.

Instead, my ultimate smile comes from what’s happening right now: snuggling on the couch with my boyfriend Knox.

Please share a few FUN facts about this book:

Fun fact 1. I rewrote the last battle scene after the book went to print because I am just that crazy.

Fun fact 2. The voice of Colonel Mallory is based on my son’s southern nanny.

Give us insight into your main character. What does she do that is so special?

Bryar Rose fights for those she loves and never gives up. She’s gentle while being strong, which became a satisfying combination to bring to life.

Was there a scene in this book that was harder to write than others?

I’ll have to return to that final battle scene. Damn, I really wanted Writer-Me to just drop it and leave the thing as is. But no! Writer-Me wouldn’t shut up and eventually, I went back and changed it. In the end, the work is better for it and I’m glad I made the edits.

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.

Thanks for having me!

Synopsis:

“A fun romp for Twilight Fans” – School Library Journal

After being raised by the meanest fairies in the history of ever, Bryar Rose is now free to live her own life. For the first time, she’s attending West Lake Prep, a regular high school. Well, mostly regular. Some students are actually hidden members of the Magicorum. In other words, they’re really wizards, fairies, or shifters. Bry doesn’t mind, though. She’s thrilled to enjoy all the new experiences of being around normal kids her age, from locker pranks to lunchtime mystery meat. Everything is going along great, except for one thing.

Bry’s dreams about the pyramids of Egypt have gotten darker and more sinister. Every night, she sees her new man Knox and her best friend Elle in danger.

“Exciting and well-conceived” – Kirkus

With no other choice, Bry plans to leave school to explore the pyramids on her own. But her new man Knox discovers the scheme and is having none of it. He wants to stay by her side, no matter what. It’s a good thing too, because Bry must solve the mystery of her attraction to the pyramids and soon. Otherwise, it could cost the lives of those she loves most.

And that means not only Knox, but also her best friend Elle.
