Learn more about Stray Moon by Kelly Meding

Please summarize the book a la Twitter style for the readers here:

A half-djinn investigator and her eclectic paranormal crew of an incubus, skinwalker, and moon witch investigate the disappearance of dozens of mated werewolf pairs, which leads them to a fertility research center funded by the most deadly enemy they’ve ever faced.

Please share a few Fun facts about this book:

Ooh, let’s see. It features the patron goddess of werewolves, who happens to be a fan of Seattle goth/grunge and video games. The main female MC Shiloh still maintains great relationships with both of her parents, especially her mother Elspeth, who is again integral to solving this book’s central mystery. A lot more Team Tennyson versus Team Jaxon moments. Plenty of magic. Snark. Sacrifice. Novak lets his incubus side out to play.

Was there a scene in this book that was harder to write than others?

I often find fight scenes with multiple characters to be difficult to write, so the climax of this book was pretty hard. Without spoiling anything, there is an epic battle between the good guys and their allies, and a bunch of bad guys, on different floors of a single building. And with the book being written in first-person, I could only show what was happening from the POV of my heroine on-page–but I still had to know what everyone else was doing while Shiloh was fighting. So that leads to a lot of extra writing that never makes it into the book, so I know what’s happened when all the characters come together once the big battle is over.

Without revealing too much, what is your favorite scene in the book?

Gosh, I don’t know if I have one specific scene. I do love anytime Shiloh and Tennyson are on-page together, and not because I’m Team Tennyson. Tennyson is a five-hundred year-old Master vampire, whose sworn enemy are djinn and his natural prey are humans. Shiloh is half of both worlds, and she fascinates him. Their banter is so much fun, and I really enjoy exploring their relationship dynamic, and watching it grow from book one and their very first scene together, to where they end up by the end of Stray Moon. They both change and grow so much.

What do you want people to take away from reading this book?

I’d say “don’t trust the government” but that may be a little too on the nose right now, so how about “family is what you make it.” I used similar themes of found family in both my Dreg City and MetaWars series, where non-blood-related characters come together to create a new kind of family that loves and supports each other. The Strays series had a lot of back-stabbing and double-agent stuff going on, but there is also a core group of characters who love each other, protect each other, and they are each other’s family. Not everyone in the real world has that sort of support from blood family, especially those who identify as LGBTQIA+, so it’s important to show that family doesn’t have to be related by blood to love each other unconditionally.

Stray Moon
(Strays #2)
by Kelly Meding
Expected Publication: February 5th 2019

Para-Marshal Shiloh Harrison has always been a great number two for the East Coast unit. But after her boss is found dead (having betrayed the paranormals he was sworn to protect), she’s suddenly thrust into a leadership role she isn’t prepared for. And it doesn’t help that she traded away memories of one of her most important team members to save another’s life during her last mission.

Too, she’s in charge of a unit that is mired in bureaucratic red tape, meaning she’s essentially under house arrest. But a West Coast Para-Marshal has astral-projected a warning: werewolves are going missing, and she needs Shiloh’s help. Last time it was vampires. This time it’s werewolves. Half-djinn herself, she knows she can’t just sit around and do nothing while paranormals are getting snatched. Her old boss may have broken his oath, but Shiloh will do anything to serve and protect.
