With her sassy humor and sexy cowboys, USA Today bestseller Carolyn Brown launches her new Longhorn Canyon series.

One city girl, one die-hard rancher, and eight mischievous kids. What could go wrong?

Every summer Cade Maguire looks forward to opening his Longhorn Canyon Ranch to underprivileged city kids. But this year, he's having no luck finding a counselor for the children-until Retta Palmer walks through his door.

Flat broke after selling everything she owns to pay her father's medical bills, Retta is thrilled to hear of an opening for a counselor position. She's not as thrilled about the ranching part, or the sexy cowboy with beautiful blue eyes who's her new boss.
After being left at the altar two years before by his fiancée, Cade isn't sure he can take another heartbreak. And Retta isn't even sure she wants to stay. But the sparks between them are absolutely undeniable. And with a couple of lovable kids and two elderly folks playing matchmaker, Cade and Retta may find that the best way to heal is with each other.

Cowboy Bold is book one in the Longhorn Canyon series by Carolyn Brown

This novel was my first experience with Carolyn Brown’s writing. I’d heard some good things about this book and others in the series. I started with book one; because I’m a reader who perfumes to read a series in order if I can and also because I won a copy of this novel.

Now the book wasn’t bad and I didn’t have any issues with anything in the story. The only thing that I had trouble with was myself and not being able to get into the story. It was slow, dull, and their was no action or suspense and really nothing to keep me interested. I’d pick up the book read a chapter, seat it down, and then do it again the next day. I just couldn’t get into the novel. I think I’m learning that I need to have something like action or suspense or a little drama in my contemporary reads or they just don’t capture me and keep my interest.

Cowboy Bold was not the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

Rated: DNF – Stopped reading at 29% Page 96.

  1. I read one book of hers on the recs of so many others and I didn’t much care for it. But I’m not a big western fan, so…

    • I wanted to like it, but it just wasn’t capturing me. Thank’s for visiting!

  2. I have a hard time with contemporary romances for this exact reason. I really need the suspense or something to keep me interested. Great review.

    • Thank you Melanie!

  3. I am sorry you didn’t like your first Carolyn Brown book. Her books are never full of action or suspense, they are simple, small town romances. I always read them when I need a pick me up or a palate cleanser. Better luck with your next read.

    • Thank you Heidi.

  4. It happens to all of us. I have to be in the mood for these slower, small-town romances.

    • I’ve had luck with other small town romances, but they had something like exciting characters, a little drama, or action to keep me interested. I wanted this one to work, but as you said it happens. Thank’s for visiting.

  5. Well that’s how it goes sometimes. It may be you were in the mood for something different too. Sorry. I like the books of hers I have read but I haven’t tried this one.

    • So many have enjoyed her books. I don’t know this one wasn’t grabbing me. It could have been a mood. Who knows. Thank’s Anne for visiting. Glad you have enjoyed some of her other works.

  6. Pretty hot cover, too bad it wasn’t a good one. I agree, I have to have SOMETHING happening for it to keep me. Just romance definitely is not my thing.

    • Me too. I need something to grab me or I just can’t do it. In the past I’d read the whole thing, but I’ve become more comfortable with putting down those books that just aren’t working for me. Thank’s for visiting.

  8. I’m sorry this one didn’t work out for you! I’m the same though. I have to have some kind of action, suspense or drama to keep my interest.
