Memos: TMST- Obscure Words & BBH – Classic Novel

Posted on by

Tell Me Something Tuesday hosted by Rainy Day Ramblings.

This week question: How do you feel about author’s throwing big, obscure words into their books?

Honestly I don’t like big obscure words. If I have a physical copy of the book and I run across a word I don’t know I have to look it up and I h8 taking the time to do that just to understand what the author is trying to convey. Now, with the eCopys you can easily look up words, but still it’s a pain to have to do that. When I pick up a book I want to be immersed and not get bogged down with words I don’t know or understand.

29th – April 4th – Name one classic novel you have always wanted to read. (submitted by Billy @ Coffee Addicted Writer)

I’m not big on classic novels, but one I’ve always wanted to read and haven’t is Interview with the Vampire.

    • Ya, Someday!!

  2. It is hard to look up books when you’re listening and driving. Even more so, if I don’t know the spelling, which can be hard with audiobooks. I don’t mind so much when I can figure the word out in context and it makes sense.

    • Oh I didn’t even think about audiobooks. Ya, that makes it more difficult to look up a word you don’t know or understand. You might get it with the connected or scene, but other times it could fly over your head. Words are great, but when an author picks something it is not used or so obscure it goes over the reader, then not so good. Thank’s for sharing.

  3. Big vocab words are okay with me as long as its clear in the text what it means. And totally Interview with a Vampire!!

    • Thank’s for sharing your thoughts on words and classics ^_^.

  4. I don’t mind learning new words through reading, even if they are big and obscure. And I enjoy flowery writing, which many times contains words I don’t understand. I will admit that I don’t look every word up though, even if I’m reading a book on my Kindle. I either try to figure it out from context or just gloss over it!

  7. I don’t mind, but I’m weird like that. I love learning new words,it helps keep your mind working. I’ve read Anne Rices Interview with a vampire a couple of times. It’s a awesome read and the main vampire character Lestat is fascinating!!! Shared on my socials!??

      Have a great day!

  8. I agree on both. I don’t like having to look up words, even if it is easily done in an ebook. It takes you out of the story and it takes a few minutes to get back into it.

I also have been wanting to read Interview with a Vampire. One of these days I’m going to get to it. It’s a whole series, right? I need to investigate.
