Character Interview: Carrie Singleton (Checked Out for Murder by Allison Brook) ~ #BookTour

Hello and Welcome!

Today we have Carrie Singleton from Checked Out for Murder here today to talk with us.

Please introduce yourself to our audience?

Hello, Everyone! So pleased to be here. My name is Carrie Singleton, and I’m the head of programs and events at the Clover Ridge Library in Clover Ridge, Connecticut. I am thirty years old and have a boyfriend named Dylan Avery who’s an investigator specializing in stolen artwork and gems. My cat, Smoky Joe, is also the library cat; I bring him to work every day.

Would you share with us the challenges you are going through?

Challenges? I’ll say I’m going through challenges. My mother’s come to town with her actor husband, Tom, because Tom has a role in a movie being filmed in Clover Ridge. My mother, who now calls herself Brianna though her name is Linda, and I do not get along. She’s self-absorbed, manipulative and . . .but I’m not here to badmouth her. It’s bad enough that Tom, who is twelve years younger than my mother, is suddenly besotted with his ex-fiancée, who just happens to be playing opposite him in the film. And then there are the murders . . .

What’s one thing you wish others knew about you?

I am totally amazed and happy to be leading a normal, everyday life—well, normal and everyday except for the murders I find myself investigating. I come from a dysfunctional family, and now I live and work in a great town where my family used to own a farm. I have a boyfriend and many friends.

What’s it like being a librarian?

I am so, so glad I got that library degree! My job as head of programs and events is to provide worthwhile, engaging activities to the library’s adult patrons. I get to bring all kinds of interesting people into the library. Recently, a psychic gave a talk on the various psychic phenomena. I also do the bi-monthly newsletter, with the help of my two part-time assistants. The best part of being a librarian is interacting with the patrons.

Do you have a favorite author or genre?

I do like reading mysteries. Probably because I’ve been involved in solving quite a number of them lately.

Tell us a bit about Evelyn, the library’s ghost? What’s she like? What’s her history?

Ah, Evelyn! Though she stops in to visit me often and even helps me investigate murders, she’s often a mystery herself. That’s because she sometimes holds back information and tells me what she feels like sharing because she’s trying to protect the reputation of one of her relatives.

Evelyn left this earthly plane when she was in her mid-sixties. She lived her entire life in Clover Ridge and worked in the library as an aide. She knows many of the townspeople, which helps when we’re investigating. Except, as I said, when the case involves one of her relatives. She was married to a very nice man named Robert and they had no children. As far as I know, my four-year-old cousin Tacey and I are the only people who can see and communicate with Evelyn.

Last, what do you think of your author?

Allison, whose real name is Marilyn, is very easy to work with. She knows I like variety, and so each of my adventures is unique. Allison/Marilyn loves her characters, and so I have many wonderful people in my life—Dylan, my boyfriend; Angela, my best friend; my beloved great aunt and uncle; and my dad. And I get to meet many interesting people.

Carrie thank you for visiting Angel’s Guilty Pleasures and speaking with me today.

Checked Out for Murder: A Haunted Library Mystery
Cozy Mystery
4th in Series
Publisher: Crooked Lane Books (September 8, 2020)
Hardcover: 320 pages

Carrie Singleton and Evelyn the ghost sleuth the slayings of a starlet and a star-crossed psychic in Agatha Award nominee Allison Brook’s fourth Haunted Library mystery.

Daphne Marriott strolls into Clover Ridge and informs librarian Carrie Singleton that she’s a psychic. But had she foreseen what fate awaited her, Daphne would have steered clear of the quaint Connecticut town. Evelyn, the library ghost, tells Carrie that there’s more to Daphne than she lets on.

The mysterious woman grew up in Clover Ridge with her no-good dad, who apparently met his end at the hands of Daphne’s brother, Billy. Still, Daphne proves a welcome distraction when Carrie’s overbearing mother hits town. Mom’s much younger husband, Tom, is in a movie that’s lensing locally, and she’s there to keep an eye on him: Tom’s costar, sultry Ilana Reingold, is also his ex-fiancée, and there’s no denying the chemistry is still there. Soon after mingling with the moviemakers at a meet-and-greet, Daphne is found dead.

Carrie and Evelyn investigate, assisted by bushy-tailed library cat Smoky Joe. But the suspect list could overflow the library shelves. Has Billy killed another relative? Is their long-missing mother involved? Or Daphne’s mean ex-husband? Carrie’s sure she knows who committed the crime, but can she bind together the clues before the culprit Dewey-decimates the town?
