An all-new novel set in the Kate Daniels World and featuring Julie Lennart-Olsen, Kate and Curran's ward.

Atlanta was always a dangerous city. Now, as waves of magic and technology compete for supremacy, it’s a place caught in a slow apocalypse, where monsters spawn among the crumbling skyscrapers and supernatural factions struggle for power and survival.

Eight years ago, Julie Lennart left Atlanta to find out who she was. Now she’s back with a new face, a new magic, and a new name—Aurelia Ryder—drawn by the urgent need to protect the family she left behind. An ancient power is stalking her adopted mother, Kate Daniels, an enemy unlike any other, and a string of horrifying murders is its opening gambit.

If Aurelia’s true identity is discovered, those closest to her will die. So her plan is simple: get in, solve the murders, prevent the prophecy from being fulfilled, and get out without being recognized. She expected danger, but she never anticipated that the only man she'd ever loved could threaten everything.

One small misstep could lead to disaster. But for Aurelia, facing disaster is easy; it’s relationships that are hard.

*** NO SPOILERS ***

Blood Heir is book one in the Aurelia Ryder series by Ilona Andrews. It’s part of the Kate Daniels world.

For those familiar with the Kate Daniels world this one is read after book #10, Magic Triumphs. This novel features Julie and Derek who we got to see in the Kate books, but now they are grown-up and both are new people with different names and life experiences.

If you haven’t read the Kate books than no worries. You could jump into Blood Heir as a a whole new series, though I recommend reading the Kate Daniels series first.

The Andrews team does a fantastic job recapping events, people, and introducing the world. For those familiar with the world, you will not find this tedious. They do such a good job weaving this information in that it feels like it was always meant to be.

In true fashion we have so much action, adventure, and a mystery. There is an overall ARC which is not completed here, but will continue in however many books the authors write for this series. I loved the feel, the pace, and everything about this novel. It swept me away. It was everything I expected and so much more. As a fan I had some giddy emotions; especially when we heard or saw old characters pop up. We learn new things about them and see that life goes on. We also get to meet new characters that are so interesting and unique. I’d love to tell you more, but each word, page, and chapter is a surprise.

As for the romance nothing happens, yet! There are hints that the dance may have started, but I’m not sure and I don’t think Julie aka Aurelia has noticed. Who knows yet what direction the Andrews team will take. Whatever direction they go it’s going to be a slow burn and build, which I’m all for. The Andrews team know how to build and I can’t wait for the ride.

The mystery in this one is captivating. We do the whole PI experience, but with magic and mythical creatures that it keeps you glued to the pages just wanting to know what will happen. Atlanta sure has changed too. We get the low down with Aurelia on the factions and it’s not what it was when Kate was patrolling and holding it strong. There are hints that things have changed in the Pack and Atlanta. I’m so curious to see what is going on with the Pack and in Atlanta.

Blood Heir is one addictive ride and one misstep could lead to disaster. I LOVED it!!

Rated: 5 Stars

  1. Nice review. This was a wonderful story and I love going back into the KD world without a Kate focus. I hope the authors can keep up with this one – I want to see where it all leads.

I’ve re-listened to Kate Daniels so many times since it came out and I’m so happy to finally be back in the world with this spin-off Aurelia Ryder. Listen or Reading it’s a joy and gives all the feel goods. ^_^ If or when you try I hope you enjoy.

    • Thank you!

  4. I was not a Julie fan during the Kate Andrews series, but it looks like she has grown up and turned into quite a heroine. Looks like I need to give her another chance. 🙂

    • Julie grew on me after a few re-reads of the series, but ya at first I wasn’t a fan. It’s nice to see her grown up and a heroine with brains and kick-ass skills/magic. I’m looking forward to the slow burn romance and magical adventures we get. I love this world and was so happy to be back. It was a joy to see all my favorites from the Katie Daniels series and what they are doing and if they have family now or not. Giddy giddy girl when I read. I’m planning on listening to the audio soon. Thank’s for visiting!
