During the rule of her murderous Dark Fae uncle, Thistle "Tricks" Periwinkle found sanctuary among the Wyr in New York. Her ethereal beauty and sparkling personality won the hearts of the public, but after her uncle's death, there are those who don't want to see her ascend to the throne.

Able to wield thunder and lightning, Wyr sentinel Tiago Black Eagle has ruled the skies for centuries. His massive build and thunderous power make him one of the Wyr's best weapons. And he's sent to protect Tricks when she's almost assassinated in Chicago. Soon, both Tiago and Tricks will fall prey to the stormy hunger that engulfs them - a passion that will shake the very foundation of all the worlds.

Storm’s Heart is book two in the Elder Races by Thea Harrison.

It follows just after the events in Dragon Bound which had the death of the Dark Fae King. This storyline continues with the long lost Fairy Princess and Heir to the Dark throne, Thistle “Tricks” Periwinkle.

The first time I read this story was back in 2015. I enjoyed the novel and wanted to return it with the audio vision now that I’ve discovered my love of audios and so this go around (2021) I listened.

Tricks is a fun and relatable heroine who we meet in Dragon Bound. Her bubbly happy personality is put to the test in Storm’s Heart. Her frustrations are expressed in some entertaining ways like a few temper tantrums, but they are with those she loves. It doesn’t feel childish, just right for Tricks’s character and her relationships. We learn fast that she has a hard road ahead and she struggles with finding a balance between the past and looking to the future. Though she won’t have to do it all alone. Fate has put someone in her path who will complement her and help her survive the road ahead.

Tiago Black Eagle, a thunderbird was once worshiped as a god and is as old as time. He’s seen and lived a long life, but when Fate puts one bubbly and irritating fairy in his way, well his life changes. He’s one scary guy, but his hard edges are softened by his vulnerability when it comes to our heroine. We see many sides to Tiago, but one thing is for certain he will do anything to protect what is his.

The romance isn’t an instalove. They have known each other for 200 years, so they have a working relationship/background. You may feel the relationship is a bit mean, but they balance each other. It starts of antagonizing “mean flirting” then moves onto hot and heavy. We got to see vulnerabilities and compromises in both characters. To me their romance worked!

The secondary characters featured previous characters who make appearances or a few like Rune and Ariel who hang out longer. We also meet some new characters such as an ancient and powerful vampire, Carling. The dark fae aren’t left out, but we don’t get to see the court just the delegation and guards.

Narration: Sophie Eastlake did a great job. I liked her voices for the characters. Tricks had that young bubbly voice and Tiago had that dark Alpha. All the voices where pleasant and well done. I do recommend the audiobook for this novel.

Storm’s Heart gives us a nice mix of mystery, action, and romance.
