Preston

Life has hit me below the belt, and I have lost those I hold most dear. On my sister’s deathbed, she made me swear I’d care for her baby girl as if she was my own. After six years of loving her like my daughter, we live a quiet and peaceful life. In the midst of more loss, I meet this couple, and unbeknownst to me, they are who I need to feel whole again.

Hardy

Dakota is my life, my wife, and my partner. We fit together like two jagged edges, making the perfect combination. Our unconventional life falls under scrutiny as the heir of a large family conglomerate, choosing to live quietly behind closed doors with our kinks. But what happens when another closes the gap and makes us even more complete. Do I walk away from my responsibilities as the perfect son my parents desperately want from me?

Dakota

I’m a free spirit, going where the wind takes me. So far, it’s been simple in the life I live with Hardy. Until a trip to a new resort has us questioning if we can love another as deeply as we love each other. I know the answer the second I set my eyes on the broody bartender with a ton of baggage. How do we convince the man he’s worth all the love in the world when everything he’s already lost and more may be taken from him?

Hardy:

Pushing my seat back, I round the corner just enough to drop a kiss on her cheek. “I’ll be right back, Dove.”

Preston takes his food and drinks on a tray, crossing over the double doors only to disappear inside the main building of the resort.

I follow suit, not far from him, as he moves through the lobby and past a sign posted no guests allowed. It doesn’t stop me.

“Hey, man. Do you mind if I have a word with you?”

He stops, his hands holding both sides of the tray.

“Well, fuck me twice, man. What the hell is up with you two? We had sex. I don’t have a girlfriend or wife. Now, can a man have a beer or two and wallow in the fucked-up day I’ve had?”

My fingers comb through my hair. “Yeah, sorry, bro. It’s most likely shitty timing. And I’m not sure what’s gotten into Dakota. But this evening was the second time you’ve disrespected my wife. It was her fear we’d cross the line with a taken man. Something we won’t ever knowingly do.” There’s no reaction to my words. “So, if I hear you talk to her in that way again, we’re going to have issues.” His eyes don’t change, as if he’s not surprised by what I’ve revealed. “I won’t lie. I’m a little amused by her reaction to you. She’s never responded to another person, other than me, as she has with you. But don’t ever confuse my amusement with my protective nature when it comes to my wife. I’d never dream to disrespect her, nor will I allow anyone on this earth to do the same. I hope we have an understanding.”

His lips stay pursed, his eyes narrow in on me. “Did I ask for your opinion? Or your two cents? And I’m not one to be fucked with, but I swear to the higher powers above, as of now, I’ll be sure to never utter a word to you or your wife again.”

“Ah, now I went and did it. Listen to you. I’m quaking in my boots.” I look down at my Rainbow flip-flops. “Looky here, I don’t have boots. And while you’re at it, go get fucked, you cunt bag of donuts.” I stop for a moment, standing close to him, neither one of us willing to back down. The tray is the only thing separating us. A grin overtakes my face, and I reach for a French fry on his plate, popping it in my mouth. “Great to know we have an understanding. Have a nice night, jackass.” And with that, I spin around, and my destination is clear. I’ll always end up near my dove.
