Hello and Welcome All!
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Patrick from Pool of Crimson.
Hi Patrick, thank you for agreeing to this interview.
Tell us a little about yourself and your background?
Good Evening, it is a pleasure to speak with you and your readers. I always enjoy meeting new people and getting to know what makes them tick. As for me, I am quite harmless. I currently reside in Columbus Ohio as protector of the vampire colony there. I have been at Ethan’s right hand for the last 70 years and although I often remember and miss my human existence, I am quite content with the life I have and have built for my people.
Tell us your story?
My story is exceptionally mundane. I had enlisted in the army after Pearl Harbor, leaving behind my fiancé Rose. But the night I met Margot and she both saved my existence while taking my life, I became something else entirely, leaving my human existence behind. The man I had been was gone and the family, fiancé, and dreams that I had harbored were gone, replaced with something entirely new. After Margot’s death in the early 1960’s, Ethan set his sights on something more permanent and more powerful. We traveled back to the U.S., overtaking the Liege in Columbus who was weak and overlooked by Lebensblut. We began to build Ethan’s empire. It is here where my life changed again, where I met the Blushing Death.
What problem do you have in your story?
I am consumed by a desire for a woman that is contrary to my well-being and those of my people. That woman is both frustrating and alluring to the point of distraction. The colony stands at a precipice that requires all my mental faculties and I cannot afford a distraction, no matter how enticing.
Do you have a problem that wasn’t mentioned in the story?
In the last few decades, I have grown incredibly lonely. I’ve had to keep myself apart to consolidate my power and ensure the colony’s survival. This has plagued me as I’ve been relegated to casual encounters and meaningless women. This would have at one time been enough but as time presses down on me, I come to understand that perhaps alone is not always best.
How did you become the Master vampire’s second-in-command?
My sire was Ethan’s soul reason for existing once he found her ready to be burned at the stake. They were never apart for more than a few hours and when she turned me in the open field in the middle of Southern France, I became her child and his. When Ethan left Europe after her death to claim a new land of his own, he brought me with him and I have been standing at his side ever since. He is like a father to me.
How do you feel about Dahlia? What is she to you?
Dahlia is an enigma. She is brazen, dangerous, complicated, and lovely. The depth of that woman’s storm grey eyes are enough to cause a man to drown and at times, I find myself wishing that I could. She is so confident and larger than life. I forget she is mortal.
What is your most prized possession?
A worn copy of Cyrano deBergerac that once belonged to my mother. I have carried it with me since her death before I was born into this new life.
Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
I believe the author portrayed what I permitted her to see. There are more depths to my character than even she realizes.
What is your author like?
I’m often concerned that she will reveal too much of my plans. As her personality can be very forthright, I fear that my time table will be moved forward prematurely.
10 Quick Things About Patrick
What is your favorite color? Why?
My favorite color is Red. I enjoy the crimson flush of blood beneath a woman’s skin.
What is your favorite food? Why?
I used to enjoy a well prepared veal scaloppini but that was before my diet was limited to a more iron based source.
What is your favorite beverage? Why?
I enjoy a robust Bordeaux Cabernet Sauvignon. Since my time in France during the war and after, I acquired a taste for the fragrant wine and have adored it ever since.
What is your favorite music? Why?
I enjoy classical music and opera, the powerful arias of Puccini and Verdi move me in a way that today’s beat driven drivel does not.
What is your favorite item of clothing? Why?
A soft, grey cashmere sweater. It’s comfortable and is timeless in its appeal.
What is your favorite book? Why?
The Count of Monte Cristo. Dumas’ story of revenge, loss, and perseverance speaks to me in a way that no other novel has. I like to think of myself as Danteseque.
What is your favorite season? Why?
Winter. The nights are deliciously long.
What is your favorite band or musician? Why?
Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. Whenever I was in New York while human, I would make a point of visiting the Harlem Jazz clubs. There was no other place I’d ever been that felt as free as those clubs.
Who is your favorite author? Why?
Machiavelli. I believe that answer speaks for itself.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share with our readers!
