Sekhmet’s Guardians by V.S. Nelson
Genre: Paranormal – Romance
Series Main Plot/Theme:
Nearly six thousand years ago a group of Sekhmet’s personal guards stepped through a portal from Tuat (where the Egyptian Gods reside) to Earth after their king was killed. Their assignment was simple enough; find the leader and followers of Set’s Legions who committed such a horrible atrocity and destroy them.
Sekhmet in her wisdom offered her blood to her elite force, which granted them immortality. Are they vamps? In a sense, but not in the traditional sense. They do require blood to survive and to keep them bound to Earth, but they can also walk in daylight, eat and drink normal food, go for long periods of time without digesting it, mate and have children. They can also die by being beheaded. Anyway, their purpose remain today what it was in the beginning. Living near Lake Michigan Sekhmet’s guards run a world-wide protection agency, named Guardians Incorporated, more commonly called GI, where they protect the rich, the famous and the less fortunate from the Legion or ills of our modern day world.

Eternal Lovers: Gabriel, their leader meets and falls hard for Jennifer, a young married Native American woman of twenty four. Jen has come to the area to seek the advice of her best friend. She blames herself for her failing marriage. Although she is attracted to Gabe, she is also afraid of his intimidating size (and manners) and has no intention of breaking her marriage vows.
Over time and because of the loss of his true first love, Gabe has grown hard, sometimes cruel and secretly wishes his enemy would take his head so he can leave this world for good. That is until he meets Jen and all hell breaks out.
Jennifer on the surface seems like any other half-breed Native woman with exceptional abilities. She’s always been able to use her mind to communicate with animals, read other people’s past lives and she has a few other tricks and secrets up her sleeve. She’s assumed she inherited these gifts from her long since deceased grandmother, a Native medicine woman. Little does she know she actually inherited most of her secret talents from her birth father, a man, she never met.
Unaware to her, Ronan, her father, has watched her since her birth; keeping a close and protective eye on her. He remains in the shadows until Jennifer’s life is at stake. Once Jen is on her road to recovery, she learns the truth, she is half Selkie. But not the Selkie we have all come to know and love through our European mythological tales but the Native version of this great shifter.
With the end of her marriage (will save that spoiler) Jennifer and Gabe set course on a romantic tale of their own. Gabriel soon discovers there is more to his attraction to Jennifer than he first suspected. She is in fact the reincarnation of his first and only love Akhakh, the woman he lost to the Legion in ancient Egypt and finally Sekhmet’s prophecy comes full cycle.
He sat down in the chair directly next to Bill. He started to speak, but before he uttered a single word, he was silenced by the Ancient’s unspoken command.
“Do you know who I am?” The largest of them asked.
“Sire, I can only assume you are one of the seven Ancients, one of the makers of our race.”
“I am Gabriel, once know as Netchkhet. I am the leader of the Guardians.”
“Sire, it is an honor.”
“Silence. Do not speak unless you are spoken to. Your fate and the fate of that…” Gabriel said as he sneered at Bill, “…is undetermined. Do not try to please me with your whimpering pledges of admiration.”
It dawned on David that Gabriel’s mouth was not moving as he spoke. He was interjecting his thoughts directly into his mind.
“The decision has been made. I was content to keep your little secret quiet for Jennifer’s sake. I even thought about giving her husband the opportunity to make a choice, Jennifer or you. Not anymore.”
He turned his attention to Bill and spoke aloud. “You will release all holds on Jennifer. You will never see her again. Everything you own is now hers. Your house, your money, and your cars… Do you understand?”
Bill’s head nodded as he was still unable to speak.
Gabriel looked back at him and once again interjected his question directly into his mind.
“Does this mortal mean anything to you? Or is he here simply for your amusement? Speak your answer aloud so all can hear.”
David wasn’t sure if the Ancients would understand his feelings towards Bill but he had nothing to lose by telling them the truth. They would know if he was lying.
“I love him more than my own life. If he would have me, I would have him as my lifemate.”
“That woman has stood in the way of my happiness…”
Gabriel growled then slapped him right out of his chair and sent him flying across the room.
“DO NOT USE THAT TONE WITH ME EVER AGAIN! That woman as you called her has a name, and you are not worthy to speak it. Now get your ass back in the chair. I’m not finished with you.”
He crawled back across the floor and into the chair without ever standing.
Gabriel pulled out a cell phone and pushed a button to call someone.
“Are you watching this? Good, tell me what this son of a bitch’s holdings are.”
“Okay, thanks,” the Ancient said before flipped the cell phone closed.
“You’re lucky I don’t kill the two of you right here. Knowing what is in your veins gives me that right.”
He knew exactly what Gabriel was referring to. All immortals knew their own ancestry. He swallowed hard, hating the fact he was a descendent of Unab.
“In spite of everything you have done; the pain you have inflicted on a mere innocent, I will allow you both to live. I do not want to dirty my hands with your blood, for if I were to kill you, I would be unworthy of her presence. But I can not let you off scot free. You will make restitution on behalf of your new lifemate to Jennifer. Do you agree to my demands?”
David didn’t know what or how much it was going to cost him but he was willing to pay anything to have a life with Bill. He placed his right hand over his heart and bowed his head.
“Sire, on the blood of my father, I do so agree.”
The oath was given.
“Good. I have been informed that you have considerable holdings. You will deposit twenty five million dollars into a Swiss bank account we set up for her. In addition, you will deposit five hundred thousand into her personal bank account. For every year the two of you live, you will continue to make an additional deposit of the sum of five hundred thousand into her Swiss account. My associates will send you the information you will need within 24 hours. She will never know this money comes from you. Neither of you will see her again. Jennifer will remain under the care and protection of the Guardians for her entire life… Do you understand me?
David bowed his head. “Yes Sire.”

Eternal Nights: Jennifer has left her wolf, Nowaki, in the care of Raphael, (Gabe’s second in command) while she and Gabe are on an extended honeymoon. Is it age or is he going mad? Raphael begins hearing voices and his nights are filled with erotic dreams of a woman he calls his “angel,” hence her long platinum hair. Raphael beings to search for her but remains silent to his brethren, hoping he will find her and all will be well.
In the meantime, the war between the Guardian forces and the Legion heat up. While on a trip North, Raphael is wounded. The wolf saves his life but not until she stands on the threshold of death’s embrace. And although it is the wolf lying on his chest in the remote forest, it is the woman of his dreams he sees and interacts with.
Meanwhile, the ghost of Jen’s grandmother appears, who shares an incredible story with her. She has a sister and in order to save her life (born premature) her grandmother placed Jessica’s life essence inside a tiny wolf cub then gave the cub to Jen. Sadly her grandmother passed before she was able to reverse the magic. She now asks Jen to undo what she has done. There are a few more ups and down in this story but in the long run, Jessica and Nowaki are both saved, Jessica and Raphael are united in a Happy Ever After and things are set up for book three.
SNIPPET: ETERNAL NIGHTS
Hours later, with stars twinkling over head and a bright full moon, Raphael and Jessica walked barefoot out on the long cedar dock that overlooked Jennifer’s favorite cove. They sat, dangling their feet in the cool water, enjoying the quiet surroundings after a day packed with travel and entertaining others.
“Jessica, there are some things we need to talk about,” Raphael said, sadness seeping into his vocal cords as he spoke.
She didn’t want him to be sad–not now–not ever. Turning her head she looked at him, waiting for him to continue.
“When… After Jen did the separation…”
“Raphael, I think I know what is bothering you… you think I don’t remember you saving my life but I do… It’s what saved me, Ray.”
“Ray? Since when did I become Ray?”
“The minute I first laid eyes on you back at the animal rescue center. You were my ray of hope, my ray of inspiration, the one that gave me the strength to fight for what I believed to be my destiny.
“And now that you are here?”
There was a questioning tone to his voice–one she wasn’t sure she liked. His attitude was towards her was changing. Something is off. Had all of it been a lie? For over a week they remained by each other’s side. He never left her alone for more than a few minutes the entire time they were in the mountains. Was everything they encountered, night after night, while he slept a lie? Was it just some fantasy she created in her own mind to give her the strength she needed to overcome her grandmother’s magic? Was he just being kind to her out of some sense of obligation or for his love for Nowaki?
“You’re not sorry about offering your life force to me, are you?” She questioned silently, trying to hide her panic.
“Oh no, I was just afraid that you didn’t remember and that you might be uncomfortable with the idea… I don’t want any secrets between us… and I don’t want you to feel like you are being forced into a relationship you may not want…”
Want? Was he kidding? Ray is everything… my reason for living, for existing.
“After thinking about it, I don’t think that little action bound you to me… You do know that you are free to make your own decisions on where you want to live… who you want to be with…”
Is that why he hadn’t touched her this past week? He wanted her to choose someone else. It had never dawned on her until now, he might not want her. She fought back the tears as she stood up, slid out of Alice’s grey sweat suit and dove deep into the icy dark water.
In the mountains on the day they visited the cabin where she was born, Jennifer told her of her experiences as a Selkie. Jen had always had a love for water but said, “Never before embracing her Selkie side, did she truly know what it meant to be one with the water.” To be emerged and comforted by the depths of the deepest pools was something she was longing for–needed this very instant. No wonder broken hearted Selkies sought comfort at the bottom of the ocean. The minute she dove in she felt the water protecting and comforting her like a mother’s womb–like Nowaki had for so many years.
She wasn’t sure where this water would take her–hopefully somewhere away from here–away from all the pain she was feeling. Perhaps she would eventually find the great ocean Jennifer talked about–perhaps she would find others of her kind where she could live out her days. Why, oh why did I take Ray’s gift? The wounds would have killed me and I would have been spared from this agony.

Eternal Blades: Lance, (Gabriel’s baby brother who is a computer geek) and Tshering Snow, a white haired beauty from the Himalayas take center stage in book three. As I previously mentioned there are more to these books than one romance. Tshering is introduced to the Guardians when she is rescued in Book two from the Legion forces. Lance is convinced she is the one he has waited his entire life for and although he has the reputation of a playboy, nothing could be farther from the truth.
Tshering, like most women, has a few secrets of her own, which is also revealed in Book two. Although she appears human, she is a were-tiger. Afraid the others won’t understand she hides herself from the others, including Lance when shifting until the woman on Jen’s boat are attacked by the Legion. The women save the day and all is well until Jen learns the Legion is not only kidnapping women, they are now kidnapping small children. She, Jessica and Tshering set out on an adventure without their mate’s knowledge to rescue a warehouse full of youngsters only to have their plan backfire on them. They are captured by Legion forces. While Jessica and Tshering are held in the basement, Jen wakes in the arms of a man she first sees as Gabe… (woops) It’s not Gabe, but his identical twin brother Bagsu, the leader of Set’s Legions. Jen works her magic and convinces Bagsu to return her and her friends to GI, meanwhile Tshering has been taken by Unab, an ancient Legion Prime, who is behind the children’s kidnappings. He’s seen her shifting abilities and has full intention of making her his queen and over-throwing Bagsu for leadership of the Legion.
In the end, the woman including Tshering are returned to GI. Gabe and his onetime best-friend and twin come close to reuniting but before they shake hands, Bagsu dematerializes into the unknown; a place where time is at a standstill and all time come together. Too bad, Unab escapes during an all-out battle (which sets up books four and five) Tshering and Lance are swept into the past, Tuat, where they unite as one before returning to the present.
SNIPPET: ETERNAL BLADES
Lance stopped just before they made their way to main floor of the estate. With both of his hands on her waist, he turned her around to face him.
“Are you sure you’re okay?”
There were still lines of worry on his face. When he first arrived back at the dock he ran to her, leaving someone else to care for his boat while he quickly checked her over for injuries. She assured him she was fine. His hands traveled over her entire body. In fact, she was more than fine. Seeing the love on his face, she would gladly endure it all over again. Her heart was pumping adrenaline faster than it ever had and it wasn’t just from the fight or the excitement of what transpired–she was once again reassured he cared deeply for her.
“Lance, I’m okay… really. I’m just worried about Marie. I didn’t mean to keep her underwater so long… but I didn’t have a choice… I was afraid if I returned to the surface too soon…”
“Honey, you did the right thing. You heard Michael, Marie is going to be fine. He only called the OB to be on the safe side.”
“I hope so…”
He tilted his head, placing his lips on hers, bringing her closer and into the comfort of his warm embrace. When they broke apart, she noticed his eyes were clouded with moisture.
He stroked her cheek with his thumb. “God, I thought I lost you… I’ve never been so scared in my life.”
She was amazed… no, shocked. Lance who was always so composed was rattled while she seemed to be holding it together.
“Lance, I’m fine, really… Come on, I think we need to go in the dining room. Gabriel is still waiting to hear what happened.”
“It won’t hurt my brother to wait a few more minutes… I just need to hold you for a while… Please?”
He wrapped his arms around her, pulling her closer to him.
“You’re sure your okay?” He asked again.
She nodded her head which was resting on his strong shoulder.
Seconds passed before he pulled back, smiled at her then took hold of her hand. “Come on, let’s go join the others.”

Eternal Tuat: (Bagsu’s story and the first historical.)
As you just read, Bagsu dematerializes into the Unknown, this is where this book takes place. He takes the reader back in time, back to the beginning when Brothers where united as they should be. Best of childhood friends he and Gabe sit on the steps of a temple waiting for Lance to be born. It follows their lives until the moment they arrive in ancient Egypt, a time when they become bitter enemies. I should mention, a glossary of terms and names is included in this book since the Guardians weren’t always known as Gabe, Raphael, Lance, etc. It is Bagsu’s story, his life and the events which took him on a totally different course through the ages than his brother. The book ends when Bagsu knows his time is in the past has ended. He returns to the present hell bent on destroying Unab which sets up the next book in the series.
SNIPPET: ETERNAL TUAT
Time seems to stand still as I ingest the bitter-sweet fruit which is offered to me. The power of my ancestors and the knowledge of the Gods overwhelm my entire being, changing me somehow into that which they are. I can feel my body undergo a transformation as each drop I swallow is absorbed in my organs. My muscles twist and pound against my flesh. I grow in height and strength.
I’m suddenly aware of all things around me; my senses are alive taking on a life of their own. I hear the thoughts of others–in this room and outside these sacred walls. A hunger I have never had before engulfs me. I want more, need more, demand more. I tip the silver chalice that graces my hands to my lips knowing the life it shares completes me and makes me whole. I am absolved of my past sins, washed away like a fresh morning rain; I am born anew under the hand of my Lord and Master. His blood is my blood, his thoughts become my own, his words are my words. Reborn in duty, sacrifice and blood I shed those things I once held dear to my heart as if they are nothing more than rubbish laid out on a street corner left for someone to pick up. Love for others outside this small circle of service is washed away from me as if it was a tide going out to sea never to be seen again by human eyes. It is replaced with an emotion I have no words for.
The transformation is complete.
Indifferent to what others might believe, I am he, holier than the most high. I am as my ancestors; I am a God in the eyes of mankind. I am Bagsu, the Son of Set, born not by his seed but by his blood making me Lord God over this Dominion and Chief Prime above all others who serve He who is above all others. I am Bagsu; fear me for my wrath is upon you.
