Hello and Welcome All!
Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Jocelynn Drake, author of The Asylum Tales.
Hi Jocelynn, thank you for agreeing to this interview. For those readers not familiar with you, would you please tell us a bit about yourself?
I am a Midwestern native who spends most of her time lost in the strong embrace of a good book. When I’m not working on a book, I can be found cuddling with my cat Demona, walking my dog Max, or flinging curses at the TV while playing a video game. Outside of books, pets, and video games, I am completely enamored of Bruce Wayne, Ezio Auditore, travel, tattoos, explosions, fast cars, and Anthony Bourdain (but only when he’s feeling really cranky).
How do you relax?
I stretch out on the couch with my husband on one side of me, my large dog on the other, a cat draped across my legs, and Futurama on the TV. After a few minutes, my mind goes blissfully blank.
Where do you get your ideas?
My imagination and life around me.
What is the easiest thing about writing?
Writing the story. The ideas, world, dialogue and characters are pouring out of your brain faster than you can get the words on the page.
What is the hardest thing about writing?
Getting the story right.
Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
I’d like to go drinking with Oscar Wilde. He seems like a fun, amusing guy. It would probably be a good time.
If you had to summarize the series for the readers here:
The Asylum Tales follows a former warlock-in-training who has now become a tattoo artist in Low Town. Gage has an amazing ability for finding trouble, especially when he’s trying so hard to avoid it. While the warlocks and witches of the Ivory Towers are trying to keep the world under their thumb, Gage is fighting the Grim Reaper to protect a dying woman, save his girlfriend from elves trying to kidnap or kill her, avoid ogres and their mafia boss, all while hiding – unsuccessfully – from the life he left behind. While wandering through Low Town with Gage, you will met vampires, elves, trolls, ogres, werewolves, gargoyles, succubi, pixies, and minotaurs. It’s tough being a human in a magical world. That’s why you’re local tattoo artist is there to help.
Did any scene have you crying or laughing while writing it?
The Asylum Tales didn’t have any scenes where I cried, though I seriously teared up in Dead Man’s Deal and again in Inner Demon. However, there was a pair of deaths in Pray for Dawn and especially in Wait for Du
sk (the Dark Days series) where I cried while writing. I get attached to many of my characters and it hurts when I can’t save them. That and I’ve got a weak spot for Gage. The warlock has got a good heart.
