The last thing patrol cop Kate Prospero expected to find on her nightly rounds was a werewolf covered in the blood of his latest victim. But then, she also didn't expect that shooting him would land her in the crosshairs of a Magic Enforcement Agency task force, who wants to know why she killed their lead snitch.

The more Prospero learns about the dangerous new potion the MEA is investigating, the more she's convinced that earning a spot on their task force is the career break she's been wanting. But getting the assignment proves much easier than solving the case. Especially once the investigation reveals their lead suspect is the man she walked away from ten years earlier—on the same day she swore she'd never use dirty magic again.

Kate Prospero's about to learn the hard way that crossing a wizard will always get you burned, and that when it comes to magic, you should be never say never.

Dirty Magic by Jaye Wells

Dirty Magic is book one in the Prospero’s War by Jaye Wells and Narrated by Morgan Hallett.

It’s told in fist person and is set in a broken down corrupt city where magic runs rapid. Wells does a good job making this world believable and exciting. The mystery is well done, intense, and interesting.

I’m a bit conflicted and got mixed feelings on this first novel. Kate Prospero our lead heroine has a lot going on with her. Lots of anguish, hate, and difficult discussions with no real good choices. I’m really conflicted on how I feel about her. She also inserts herself in the investigation, but her past quickly gets in the way.

There are an abundance of secondary characters. We’ve got Kate’s friends and teammates, plus a few acquaintances and a dubious love interest. These secondary characters take up a lot of focus even though they aren’t that interesting.

Kate’s love interest is her hunky/sort-of partner Morales and maybe her ex-boyfriend John. Their is no defined love interest and I never felt chemistry between Morales and Kate. The real fun started when the investigation leaves Kate to meet up with John Volos her ex-boyfriend. Both Kate and John have a dark past and he’s got this air of mystery around him.

As for the mystery we get a lot of suspense and action. Who’s cooking the werewolf potions? You’ll have to read/listen to find out.

Audio: Morgan Hallett narrates and did a wonderful job. She kept the story moving along.

Dirty Magic is a descent start to a new Urban Fantasy, Prospero’s War. I’ll been checking my library for the next audiobook.

    • That’s what I say with books I’ll try it eventually. ^_^ When you do I hope you enjoy.
      Happy reading or listing!

  3. I like secondary characters but it sounds like there are too many and it bogs down the story. Also, there’s a bit of a love triangle of sorts with the multiple somewhat-love interests. It doesn’t sound like it’s the book for me. Thanks for the review!

    • Not every book works for everyone. I wasn’t full turned off the series, but it was a total hit. We will see. I plan to listen to book 2 and will decide after that whether I’ll continue on. Thanks for visiting and sharing. Have a great week.

  4. I loved these and listened to them on audio.
