Interview: A.N. Sage (Cafe au Slay) ~ #BookTour

Posted on by

Hello and Welcome All!

Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing A.N. Sage author of Cafe au Slay.
Hi A.N., thank you for agreeing to this interview.

For those readers not familiar with you, would you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a bestselling, award-winning author of mystery and fantasy novels. I’ve spent most of her life waiting to meet a witch, vampire, or at least get haunted by a ghost. In between failed seances and many questionable outfit choices, I developed a keen eye for the extra-ordinary.

I spend my free time reading and binge-watching television shows in her pajamas. Currently, I live in Toronto, Canada with her husband who is not a creature of the night and their daughter who just might be.

I am a Scorpio and a massive advocate of leggings for pants.

If you could have dinner with any three authors (alive or dead, who would you choose and why?

Victoria Schwab (to discuss all things magic), Christopher Moore (for a good laugh), Charles Dickens (because I think he’d be a fascinating dinner companion).

How do you relax?

I am a planner junkie. If I’m not writing or illustrating, you’ll often find me in a pile of stickers and washi tapes, decorating my planners.

What’s your favorite season and why?

Fall. For two reasons: the weather and Halloween.

How did you choose the genre you write in?

I have been obsessed with solving fantastical mysteries and crimes since I was a kid. When I was very young, I organized the neighborhood kids into a detective group that hunted make believe werewolves. While other kids played video games, I kept notebook documenting “occurrences” for the detectives to follow. It’s safe to say, I was always a mystery-driven child.

How much research do you do?

It depends on the book. For Cafe au Slay, most of the research involved real-life crimes and a lot of newspaper reading. Yet for a book like The Things the River Hides, I spent a few months researching old folklore and had documents translated from three different languages. Shadowhurst required for me to visit many small towns to get the right atmosphere. All in all, I try to research as much as I can without losing the story and it’s always one of my favorite parts of writing.

How did you come up with the concept and the characters for the Orchard Hollow series?

Unlike my other books, I got the idea for book based off the two supporting characters. The idea of a snooty middle-aged ghost and a feisty raccoon was in my head before I had Piper, the lead, or even the basis of the story. I also knew I wanted Piper to own a coffee shop across the street from a fake-haunted hotel, a direct contrast to her having a ghost familiar. It was from these small notions that the series came to life.

What types of scenes are your most favorite to write?

I love a good banter scene between two characters. In Orchard Hollow, any scene where words are exchanged between Piper and Stella have been my favorite. The humor the personalities of the characters lends to the story is by far the best way to get to know them.

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.
