Seven years ago, the Veil that separates humanity from what lies beyond was torn apart, and New Orleans was engulfed in a supernatural war. Now, those with paranormal powers have been confined in a walled community that humans call the District. Those who live there call it Devil’s Isle.

Claire Connolly is a good girl with a dangerous secret: she’s a Sensitive, a human endowed with magic that seeped through the Veil. Claire knows that revealing her skills would mean being confined to Devil’s Isle. Unfortunately, hiding her power has left her untrained and unfocused.

Liam Quinn knows from experience that magic makes monsters of the weak, and he has no time for a Sensitive with no control of her own strength. But when he sees Claire using her powers to save a human under attack—in full view of the French Quarter—Liam decides to bring her to Devil’s Isle and the teacher she needs, even though getting her out of his way isn’t the same as keeping her out of his head.

But when the Veil threatens to shatter completely, Claire and Liam must work together to stop it, or else New Orleans will burn…

~ 3.5 The Veil Stars ~

The Veil is book one in Devil’s Isle series by Chloe Neill. It’s a satisfactory start for this new urban fantasy series; with a little espionage, treason, and saving the world.

The pace of the book was pretty steady throughout. The author is doing a lot of world set up and getting you ready for more. The world as a whole is unusual and unique. Things are not a hundred percent black and white, good vs. evil. The last 25% got to be the most exciting with everything coming to a close in needing to save the world.

The Veil did not stand out to me in any way. I was not blown away nor did the characters wow me. Claire was meh. Nothing about her personality stood out and the same goes for her friends. Also Clair’s character development was kind of a big leap from Sensitive to world-savior. She just did not have that kick-ass save the world thing going for me. Liam, her romantic interest, was also meh. He did not inspire alpha drooling over. As for their relationship, it did not feel very romantic. More like friends who are semi attracted to each other, so I’m currently not feeling them as a couple, if they do get together.

The Veil was an adequate read and I look forward to continue the series. If you enjoy reading Urban Fantasy and unique worlds, then you should give this one a try.

  1. Thank you for sharing, glad to see an overall positive vibe from this book. I sometimes feel that when a book is part of a series it usually is the last 25% that is the best to drag us in and make us continue the series? though that doesn’t always work out.

    • Lauren thank you for stoping in. Ya, it was an ok start to the series. Most first books are just ok and I agree the last 25% is what usually pulls a reader in. I am curious to see what happens with Devil’s Isle series next.

  2. Sometimes it’s better to wait and read a new UF series after two books are out because the 1st book is all world building. Here’s hoping that book 2 brings more action and meat to the story.

    • I agree with you Jennifer. Here is hoping we get more with book 2. I’m sure we will. It took me until book 3 to really get into her Chicagoland Vampires, so I have hope it will only improve and get more exciting as the series progresses. Thank you for stoping in.

  3. I’ve heard that from a few people now. Hopefully book two will come in and have a bigger bang to it.

    • Most first books I’ve found are eh, but that second or third really gets you going. I am hopping the second will have that bang too.
