Tell Me Something Tuesday: TBR Pile

Posted on by

Tell Me Something Tuesday is a weekly discussion post on Rainy Day Ramblings where we discuss a wide range of topics from books to blogging. Weigh in and join the conversation. If you want to do your own post, grab the question and answer it on your blog or feel free to leave a comment with your opinion!

This weeks question:

How have you learned to keep your TBR pile in check, or how would you like to control your pile?

Before blogging I didn’t have a big list of books to read. I keep track of my list on a word document, but once I started blogging and following bloggers, I made a Goodreads Profile. Now back then (2012) I was adding everything that sounded interesting and if it was a series I’d add the entire series to my To-Read-Pile. I have to say my TBR pile got out of control. Last year (2018) I started a new feature called Culling The Heard of Books on my blog.

  • My goal with this feature is to eliminate all the books in a series on my TBR. I just wanted to have the first book or which ever number of book in the series I am currently on, on my To-Read-List.
  • Another goal is to eliminate books that are no longer in publication. I’ve found a few.
  • Another is to remove those that no longer interest me.
  • And Last, my goal is to eliminate the duplicated books. What that means is I have 2 or more of the same book on my TBR pile. They are two different types of editions or formats, but they are their and I’ve found a few like that.

I’ve done a great job Culling My TBR. It started at around 1275 back in 2018 and now I’m down to 856 in 2019, that’s about 419 books removed. Not too bad for my Goodreads-To-Read-Shelf. Though I have added a few more books to the To-Read-Pile and I’m still working on culling out the heard of books, but I think it’s getting more manageable and cleaner.

In the now; I’m being more selective on what I add to my TBR and I’ve also cut back on requesting review books and accepting any review copies.

I don’t use Goodreads as my true TBR list. I will put books one there (when I remember) if I read a review and really want to read it one day. I try to remember who’s review got me to add it to the list. It helps me when I want to try something completely new. As for what I keep what I consider my “actual” TBR. I have a spreadsheet on Google Docs. I keep a list of the books I’ve requested from publishers. Books that I’ve purchased. It helps me to keep my reviews organized. I also keep… Read more »

I do this TBR culling thing from time to time too because my TBR list is ridiculous. I did the same thing you did with series, which helped.

I’ve never had too many books in my TBR pile. I can read really fast and usually don’t wait too long after getting a book that I wanted to read it.

Oh yes, the adding the whole series to the pile before you have even read one, that has backfired for me countless times. I can’t tell you how many series I have abandoned. I am glad you are working on culling the herd. You will get there!

Before Goodreads, it was easy to keep track of books to be honest, even in romance. The genre has really exploded in the past ten years or so. Normally my TBR keeps getting bigger and bigger with each other although I read quite a bit each year which keeps it at a certain level.

I need to cull my GR tbr list so bad. There are books are there I know I will never get to, but I’m scared to remove them because I put them there for a reason right? Then some of them also came in when I synced my Amazon library with GR, and it now has all the books I own but have never read in the list. My GR lists are a mess. I really need to spend some time going through them!
